Monday Afternoon Art: Drops And Circles

See, there are some drops, and then there are some circles. Perhaps this one is more fartsy than artsy.

This week’s Monday Art is “Drops And Circles.” It’s a digital painting of drops and circles.  They can’t all be winners, folks.  This probably won’t go up in the MMA store until later in the week, due to technamological glitches. Besides, I’ve got to dive into writing the production notes for RFC 44, which should be online shortly.  Keep your fingers crossed.

Cool Free Album: Hugh Cornwell

So many musical artists are making their latest albums available as free downloads, that I’m going to start featuring some of the more notable ones here in PopCult.  Kicking off this new tradition is the new album by the former frontman for The Stranglers, Hugh Cornwell.  Hugh has been making incredible music since leaving his old band in 1989, but he hasn’t had a US record label for years.  Now that isn’t a problem.  you can download his new album for free right here.  Above is the video for the song “Within You Or Without You,” which is not a cover of the Beatles tune with the same title.

What Does Everybody Want? SNOW!

Wednesday night at The South Charleston Community Center, WWE’s schizoid superstar, Al Snow, brings his special brand of lunacy to IWA East Coast.  Snow, one of the most-respected trainers and wrestlers in the business, is best known as the mannequin head-toting butt of a million jokes in Mick Foley’s best-selling books. He comes to IWA EC to face their champion, Ironton’s Trik Nasty, who is returning after several months off recuperating from a serious injury.  This should be an amazing contest.

Also appearing on the card are WWE stars Doink The Clown and Zach Gowen, along with IWA East Coast favorites, Mad Man Pondo, El Drunko, The Juggulator with Crowza and Woody Numbers, Omega Aaron Draven, Zac Vincent and more.  You can check out the full card following the jump. Tickets are $15 ringside, or $10 general admission. Bell time is 7 PM at The South Charleston Community Center, on Jefferson Road.

Monday Morning Art: Heat

Hot hot heat

See if you can figure out why this week’s MMA is called “Heat.” Here’s some clues: My air conditioning is not working (there’s a guy here recharging the freon as I type this). It’s been so hot that the next RFC has been delayed until next Monday due to heat-induced lethargy. Chocolate bars in my house are liquid at room temperature.

It’s hot.  So I made hot art.  It’s personally topical.

As always, click the image for a larger version.  Also, you can cruise over to the Monday Morning Art Cafepress store and purchase this image on a variety of garments and fine trinketry.    The stores will be updated later Monday.  The heat makes me move all slow and stuff.  Any dough made from the sale of this work will go to help out my buddy, Emily Gunter-Haynes, as has been the case for the last several weeks.  All of the artwork for Emily will be available from the PopCult Cafepress store at least through the end of summer. All proceeds will go to Emily.  I’m also still working on hooking up with a local gallery to sell prints of this work, again with all the proceeds going to my friend Emily and her family.

Hot Fun In The Sun: Production Notes For RFC 43

Episode 43 of Radio Free Charleston is online now! This puppy’s called “Holden Caulfield Shirt” and it features music from The Clementines, InFormation and Melanie Larch, plus the classic Troma Trailer for Daniel Boyd’s Strangest Dreams: Invasion Of The Space Preachers” and the educational cartoon “Drugs Are Bad.”

We shot our host segments on the lawn at The University Of Charleston during Symphony Sunday, where it was hot enough to bake a person’s brain if they were stupid enough to wear a heavy felt hat. Other locations in this episode of RFC include The La Belle Theater in South Charleston, Taylor Books on Capitol Street, and lots of backwoods boondockery from two decades ago. Plus there are the Catfish, gathering in anticipation of FestivAll.

Monday Morning Art and a Weekend Wrap Up

It's Roooody, it's Roooody!

Yep, it’s a self-portrait, a digital charcoal sketch based on a photo taken with a ten-dollar Vivitar digital keychain camera.  I mention the camera, because even though it’s about as high-quality as a gumball machine piece of electronics, I did use it to document some of the fun things that went on this weekend.  We’ll run down the weekend’s events after the jump, but for now, let me tell you about this week’s art.  Like any charcoal sketch, it’s an exercise in light composition and impressionism. I like it, even though the subject matter can be a bit of a dork at times.  I like the way it came out.  In fact, I’m using it as the default pic on my MySpace page, at least until we have some frame-grabs from episode 43 to put up.

As always, click the image for a larger version.  Also, you can cruise over to the Monday Morning Art Cafepress store and purchase this image on a variety of garments and fine trinketry.    It’s not egotistical or anything to think that people will want to buy crap with your picture on it, is it?  All of the artwork for Emily will be available from the PopCult Cafepress store at least through the end of summer. All proceeds will go to Emily.  I’m also still working on hooking up with a local gallery to sell prints of this work, again with all the proceeds going to my friend Emily and her family.

Above you see a panoramic view of Symphony Sunday.  You can click on it for a larger version, too.  There’s more like that along with a look back at the weekend when you click this here link….. Continue reading
