The Drive To 75: “The Feast Of Stephen Reunion”

Radio Free Charleston’s 23rd episode was a major departure. Delayed more than a month from its intended debut due to the death of my aunt, this episode featured the reunion of The Feast Of Stephen, who hadn’t played together in 14 years when we managed to corral them all in the studio on May 12, 2007. It was a magic night as Bob Miller, Joey Fabulous, John Radcliff, Dan Jordan, Tommy Medvick and Fred Tyler came together to play music for the sheer joy of it. The energy at LiveMix Studio that night was amazing, and I still rank this show among my best work. This was a four-camera shoot, with Jerry Fugate joining me on handheld, in addition to our two stationary cameras. Melanie was busy with tech week for the WVSO production of “Carmen.”

There is one fact about that night about which I am a bit ashamed. I still have five or six songs that the band recorded that night. It’s been more than two years, and I haven’t had time to mix the audio or edit the video for them. The good news is that there will be a sequel…someday.

You can read the original July 2007 production notes here.

The Drive To 75: “Shark Boy Shirt”

Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen (billed then as “Aurora”), plus Voices of Anatole are the musical guests for Radio Free Charleston’s 22nd episode, “Shark Boy Shirt,’ which also includes Frank Panucci’s animated short, “No Running,” and The No Pants Players eating a Watermelon. This was supposed to be the second of four weekly shows, back in June, 2007, but that run was interrupted by a death in the family, and it was over a month before episode 23 hit.

This early in the run, going weekly for a month was a big deal. Since this time, we’ve become old pros, and have done 8-episode runs without a break a couple of times. You can read the original production notes here.

Also of note: from here on in, the archive shows should appear exactly as they were when originally posted.

The Drive To 75: “Yellow Submarine Shirt”

Radio Free Charleston’s 21st episode, “Yellow Submarine Shirt,” was hosted from Kanawha Boulevard at 2:30 AM a little more than two years ago. This show featured returning musical guests Under The Radar and The Ghosts Of Now, plus vintage beer animation and a cool film by Sean Richardson and Alon Kutchinsky. You can read the original production notes here, and remember to check back for another classic episode of RFC every day in June, right here in PopCult. And don’t miss our latest new show, which you can read about here.

Two Wrongs For Sister Sarah

Unmitigated Gall

Okay, I know I’m probably the last person in the blogosphere to chime in on this, but here’s my take on the whole Sarah Palin/David Letterman dust-up. Palin over-reacted, exaggerated, blew the entire situation out of proportion, and then milked it for more publicity than it deserved. In the process, she put on display the one key flaw of the current modus operandi of the purveyors of Right-Wing Politics.

She firmly believes that two wrongs make a right.

The Drive To 75: “Ian Rotten Shirt”

The nineteenth episode of Radio Free Charleston, “Ian Rotten Shirt,” from May 2007, with music from Go Van Gogh and The Ghosts Of Now, plus new animation replacing Pentagram Flowerbox, and a further excision of something even less pleasant, is today’s classic RFC. Read the production notes here. Look for episode 20 in tomorrow’s PopCulteer column, and be sure to watch this week’s NEW episode, because it’s just so damned good!

OVADA, The Limbs, The Guitar Giveaway: RFC 73 Behind The Scenes

Radio Free Charleston’s 73rd episode, “Aqua Teen Hunger Force: The Movie Shirt” is online now. This episode, shot around downtown Charleston with street art in the background, features music from OVADA and The Limbs, plus a Plant Ro Duction Mini Movie, and The First Great Guitar Giveaway, in conjunction with Route 60 Music.

In the background of this show, you will see part of the “Coming And Going” art installation by Mark Wolfe, and “Celebrate,” by Amy Williams with Chris Dutch. Mark’s work features life-sized black-and-white photos of some of Charleston’s most notable people (and one schlub you can see at Taylor Books). “Celebrate” is an evolution of Amy’s “Press 2 For Spanish” street work from last year, expanded now to include Italian and Arabic. You’ll see those peeking over my shoulder and around my back in the host segments for this pre-FestivAll show. Continue reading

The Drive To 75: “Radio Free Parkersburg”

[kml_flashembed movie="http://lads.myspace.com/videos/vplayer.swf" width="430" height="346" fvars="m=59135219;type=video" wmode="transparent" /]

For our first major departure show we packed up the RFC cameras and headed to John Radcliff’s house up North for the very first Songpull Event in Parkersburg, where we recorded Rad, Josh Buskirk, and Don and Deron Baker. You can read the original production notes here, and check back later today for episode 73 of Radio Free Charleston, featuring music from The Limbs and OVADA (with Johnny Rad on guitar), plus a Plant Ro Duction Mini Movie and in the background, street art from Mark Wolfe and Amy William

The Drive To 75: “Kung Fu Grip Shirt”

[kml_flashembed movie="http://lads.myspace.com/videos/vplayer.swf" width="430" height="346" fvars="m=59066440;type=video" wmode="transparent" /]

Episode 17 of Radio Free Charleston, from March 2007, was “Kung Fu Grip Shirt” and featured music from John Radcliff and Under The Radar, plus a vintage toy commercial and RFC’s Resident Diva, Melanie Larch, making her wrestling debut, sort of, with IWA East Coast.

You can read the original production notes here, but be advised that the Pentagram Flowerbox cartoon has been excised and replaced with a LAX cartoon by Frank Panucci.

Tomorrow our Drive To 75 continues with episode 18, “Radio Free Parkersburg,” which was our third consecutive show featuring our old pal, John Radcliff, since we shot it at his house during the very first Songpull Event. Also tomorrow, look for production notes and links for RFC 73, with the band OVADA, which just coincidentally features John Radcliff on guitar. It’s almost like we planned it this way.

The Drive To 75: “Christmas 2006″

Tonight (we’re getting this one up late) we bring you the eleventh episode of Radio Free Charleston. This is our first Christmas show, hosted from the old location of The Purple Moon and featuring holiday music from Melanie Larch (the famous acappella “Ave Maria”), and Clownhole (the punk version of “Deck The Halls”). We also show a vintage clip of The Charleston Playhouse Quartet. John McIntyre, Jim Wolfe, John (Sham Voodoo) Estep and yours truly, singing the Radio Free Charleston theme song. We also have animated talking Christmas trees. You can read the original production notes here, but be advised, some of the original show has been surgically removed.
