Sunday Evening Video: Moonage Daydream: The Bowie Songbook

Remember fifty-two weeks ago? I’m talking about the first Sunday Evening Video of 2012 here in PopCult,, It was a rough video clip of one song from Ryan hardiman’s Good Night performance the evening before that only presented one camera angle.  Ryan had performed “Moonage Daydream: The Bowie Songbook” at Trinity Lutheran Church, joined by Mark Scarpelli, Maddy Gourevich, Molly Lynn page, Kristi Holstein, Alasha Al Qudwah and Shawn Simms.

We brought you “Absolute Beginners” from that night, and promised that we would present a full, three camera version of the show in a few weeks. Unfortunately, we encountered one of our periodic Radio Free Charleston computer meltdowns shotly after that, and Ryan’s night of Bowie kept getting shuffled further back on the burners.

Well, since Ryan will be reprising his take on the Bowie songbook again Monday night at Trinity Lutheran Church at 7 and 9 PM, with the same group of talented musicans joining him, we decided to sacrifice a rare Saturday off from video editing and stitch together this year-old night of magic. It holds up very well and I hope it persuades some of you to go hear Ryan and crew live. As a bonus, at 6 and 8 PM at Trinity, you can hear Mark Scarpelli backing up RFC guest Jonathan Tucker for a set of Josh Groban tunes.

Well, That Didn’t Seem To Take Long

2012: The Blur In Review

Maybe it’s my ever-advancing age, but time seems to be moving faster these days. We are at the end of another year, yet it seems like 2012 only lasted a month.

Since we do our official PopCult year-in-review column at the beginning of the year (come back next week for our look back at 2013) this week we are going to take an unofficial, hap-hazard, leisurely, stream-of-concsiousness look back at a pretty good year that flew by way too fast, with a nod or two to how that might affect the new year that’s coming at us like a speeding train.

Monday Morning Art: Christmas Cheer

To kick off Christmas week, we go back to an image inspired by my trip to Snowshoe Mountain Resort. This is a digital painting based on a photo of the decorated and lit-up entry to the Village at Snowshoe. Click to see it larger, and check PopCult today and tomorrow for a couple of our traditional holiday treats.

The Final ArtWalk Photo Essay Of 2012

The PopCulteer
December 21, 2012

Last night saw the final ArtWalk of 2012. Not only was it a fun ArtWalk, but it was also a great opportunity for last minute Christmas shopping. In fact, most of the shops and galleries that we’ll show you today will be open Friday and Saturday and possibly even on Monday for last minute gift ideas.

And remember if you shop local, you don’t have to pay shipping charges and if you get somebody a brass monkey holding a plunger, it’s much easier for them to return it.

We made it to many of the galleries and shops that were open last night, but not all of them, so why don’t you get yourselves to Downtown Charleston and explore it on your own?

This is just a rough guide. Having said that, let’s start with the ArtWalk photo essay…

The Purple Moon

Lot’s of cool gift ideas at The Purple Moon, like these Blenko lamps

The 2012 PopCult Gift Guide Day Eleven: Last Minute Gift Ideas

Okay. We’re less than a week away from Christmas. It’s down to the wire. And you blew it. You haven’t picked up any gifts yet. Today, we’re gonna save your sorry hide by suggesting some last minute gifts that you can lay your hands on, wrap up, and throw under the tree just inside the deadline.

Vegan Food

So you’re wondering what to get your friend who loves animals but also loves to eat. May we suggest a meal or gift certificate for Mission Savvy at 202 Hale St. in Downtown Charleston, Charleston’s hippest eating establishment where you can find food for which no animals were harmed in the production.

Merry Christmas From Radio Free Charleston

Radio Free Charleston 176 is our 2012 Christmas Special. Filmed at and named after the Marx Toy Museum, this show features music from the Charleston Gay Mens Chorale, a duet from Lee Harrah and Pepper Fandango, a special “double trio” from the cast of “MARY: A Rock Opera,” and Prank Monkey. Also in this episode, we have the Ghost of Animation Past, a holiday message from Razor Sharp Studios and Burt Flemming, and a quick musical tour of The Marx Toy Museum in Moundsville, WV.

The host segments for this episode were recorded at The Marx Toy Museum in Moundsville, WV which is one of the coolest places on earth, celebrating the legacy of Louis Marx and what was at one point, the largest toy company in the world. We took a day trip to Moundsville for what was one of the most fun host segment shoots we’ve ever done. Many thanks to Francis Turner and Kandi Fanton and The Marx Toy Museum for making us feel welcome. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday until December 29, when they close until Spring. It would be a great, fun trip to close out the year.
