Sunday Evening Video: Collaboration

Above you see an episode of the web-based music and dance series, Remixed. This is a show that pairs musicians with dancers to create original music videos. In this episode, we see Big Bad VooDoo Daddy team up with dancer, Melinda Anderson.  Remixed is part of D/S2DIO, the Dance and Lifestyle channel, over at YouTube. This show was created by director, Jonathan Chu (GI Joe: Retaliation, Step Up 3D), and is a pretty cool concept. Check it out, and head over to the Remixed Channel for more episodes.

Local Stand-up Comedy…and it’s funny!

The PopCulteer
March 29, 2013

Last night I got to experience the infancy of a new creative scene in the Charleston area. I went to Mojo’s, in South Charleston, near the Mound, for a night of local stand-up comedy.

To be honest, I went in with low expectations. I’ve seen some local attempts at stand-up before. Some showed promise. Others did not. This could have been a train wreck, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. We had a lot of fun. The comedians are still learning their craft, but their material was original and funny.

We were there to support Patrick Felton (above right), of the That Conversation podcast, who is currently directing Melanie Larch (you should know her by now if you’ve been reading PopCult for any length of time), in Edward Albee’s “A Delicate Balance” (Opening in late April at the Alban Arts Center). Patrick surprised me with a terrific set of confessional and contoversial material. He was really good, and he was not alone.

Ditko Monsters: Gorgo!

The PopCult Bookshelf

Ditko Monsters: Gorgo!
By Joe Gill and Steve Ditko
Edited and Designed by Craig Yoe
Yoe Books/IDW
ISBN-13:978-1613775523

Ditko Monsters: Gorgo! is yet another high quality historical compilation assembled by Craig Yoe and follows up two more academic books about Steve Ditko, released by Yoe Books. Whereas The Art of Ditko (introduction by Stan Lee) and The Creativity of Ditko (introduction by Paul Levitz) were more scholarly career retrospectives, Ditko Monsters: Gorgo!, and the upcoming Ditko Monsters: Konga! collect work that Steve Ditko produced during a very brief period in the early 1960’s for the loveable, low-rent comics publisher Charlton.

A Handy-Dandy Guide to all the JoeLanta posts in PopCult

Okay, I’ve written a ton of stuff about JoeLanta 2013, my first GI Joe convention, over the past couple of weeks. You’re probably getting sick of it. But just for the fun of it, and to provide one nifty post that ties the whole thing together, this week’s PopCult Toybox is going to collect links and videos to all the JoeLanta articles that I’ve posted here in PopCult.

Before you look at the lead-up, why not watch the 22-minute video report I posted here?

Monday Morning Art: Pop Afrodesiac

We’re kicking off this week with a flashback to an image from last June’s edition of Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School.  This is the lovely Afrodesiac, done up as a Pop-Art oil painting. The next Dr. Sektchy’s is on April 21 at Kanawha Plater’s Theater. It’s a Battlestar Galactica-themed session starring Kitty Kilton and Leo Tuxedo. This session will be held from 4 PM to 7 PM, as Dr. Sketchy’s experiments with more flexible hours.

Sunday Evening Video: More JoeLanta 2013

Above you see twenty-two minutes of highlights from JoeLanta 2013, which you should be well familiar with by now if you’ve been reading PopCult. This special video capsule includes interviews with two of the convention’s organizers, Buddy Finethy and David  Lane, and with prominent 1/6 scale action figure collector, Dave (Tanker) Matteson.

Among the scenes from the convention are brief snippets of the Hobby Roundtable, film festival, Team Trivia, the parachute drop, Swapapalooza, the diorama displays, the dealer’s rooms and an entire song by Radio Cult.

ArtWalk Returns, The Quarrier Diner Retreats and there’s stuff to do.

The PopCulteer
March 22, 2013

It’s ArtWalk time again. Charleston’s organized stroll through downtown art locations has stirred from its long Winter’s nap, and even though the weather was still a bit Wintry, the gallries were open, and we took the PopCult camera out to see all the arts.

Unfortunately, your PopCulteer was exhausted after a long week, so we only hit five locations, but we will still bring you our humble efforts. Including the Art of the Graphic Novel exhibit at Romano Asociates, where Mr. Danny Boyd (seen above right) was showing off volume two of the Chillers Graphic Novel (coming April 10, stay tuned for more details).

After the photo essay, we have a few words on The Quarrier Diner, and a rundown of weekend events, but first, it’s artin’ time!

Mitch O’Connell-The World’s Best Artist

The PopCult Bookshelf

Mitch O’Connell-The World’s Best Artist
by Mitch O’Connell
Last Gasp
ISBN 978-086719-773-0
$35.00

I have to start this review off with a disclaimer: I am a huge fan of Mitch O’Connell. We palled around a bit at a couple of comic book conventions in the 1980s, when I was editing CODA, and we reconnected years later via MySpace and became online buddies. Mitch was the first guest artist featured in Monday Morning Art here in PopCult, and I have paid real cash money for his artwork. Plus he has the decency to be slightly older than I am.

So this is going to be a very complimentary review.

JoeLanta 2013: Roundtable Hobby Summit

One of the reasons I went to JoeLanta this year was that I was asked to be part of a roundtable discussion on the future of the 1/6 scale action figure hobby. Rather than try to explain it, why don’t you just watch it in its entirety?

In the above clip you will see JoeLanta organizers, David Lane, Buddy Finethy and Marten Jallad, plus Scott and Charlotte Beckmann, the moderators of The Trenches, one of the top GI Joe discussion forums on the web, and Pop Culture reporters Jon Waterhouse and Anthony Taylor. Joining in also were Greg Brown from Cotswold Collectibles, the hobby’s leading supplier, super fans Steve Charlton and E.J. “King of Swapapalooza.” They even let some guy named Rudy Panucci blather on a bit. There were also questions from the audience, including some from Dave Matteson and Alan Dawson.

Been To JoeLanta!

If you’ve been reading PopCult this past week, you ought to know that I went to Atlanta, Georgia over the weekend to attend my first ever GI Joe collectors convention, JoeLanta 2013.

I have a ton of video and photos and things to share with you, but I’m still recovering from the drive back, and the video is rendering slowiy, so today we’re goingg to bring you a brief photo essay. Tomorrow night you can expect video from the Hobby Roundtable panel, which I was proud to be part of, and a full-blown report on the convention will pop up by this weekend.

For now, here are ten images from JoeLanta 2013. Photos by Melanie Larch and Rudy Panucci.

This picture was taken in the lobby of the Marriott Century Center, in Atlanta. It’s the home of JoeLanta, and….some GI Joes come with parachutes.
