Monday Morning Art: Lacing Up

Lacing up for Dr. Sketchy’s, that is.

Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School will happen again this Sunday at 6 PM at WVSU EDC (AKA DigiSo) and while this month’s theme features Dolly Dagger as Jessica Rabbit, today’s art is yet one more shot from last month’s session of Roller Derby poses by Lavender Menace. This one is just a bit of a digital doodle, but I liked it. Click to enlarge, and check PopCult later today for The RFC MINI SHOW starring The Suede Brothers.

RFC Flashback: FestivALL Shows From 2011

logo-festivall-150x150Back in 2011 we bought you eight episodes of Radio Free Charleston devoted to FestivALL. We did this all in twelve days. The episodes ranged from seventeen to thirty-three minutes long, with a total running time of two hours and fifty minutes. You can watch all eight of these shows, each one crammed full of God-knows-what, right there at the top of this post. Or you could be out enjoying FestivALL 2015. I will leave the choice in your hands.

Tomorrow, check PopCult for more FestivALL memories in our Sunday Evening Videos.

John Hodgman In Charleston

So here’s what happened: The plan was that this week’s PopCulteer would feature a long interview with Comedian/Actor/Author John Hodgman, who is appearing at The Culture Center on Monday. I’d sent in a batch of questions for John a couple of weeks ago, and since I knew that he’d already talked to Bill Lynch (read his interview HERE), I decided to give him the chance to do our interview in character and have fun with some of his trademark deadpan humor.

Unfortunately, right after he spoke with Bill, John went on tour and didn’t have time to craft answers to the questions that I’d sent him. He’s basically been living in airports this month. So a few days ago I got word that the interview wasn’t going to happen, but he did compliment my questions.

So what I’m hoping happens is that, on Monday when he performs at The Culture Center at 8 PM as part of FestivALL (tickets available HERE) that the show is a huge success and he loves it so much that decides to come back and perform in our fair city again real soon. Then I can get those questions to him again and run the interview here in PopCult!

Also as part of FestivALL, on Tuesday, beloved Charleston native, Ann Magnuson, returns home with a new show called “An Evening of SurRURALism.” Everyone should go see this. It’s going to be an evening of music, stories, burlesque and art. In fact, your PopCulteer is honored to have been asked to contribute some artwork to this show.

I’m going to tell you more about SurRURALism next week, but for now here’s what Ann posted on Facebook about the show:

Synn and Salt

The PopCult Bookshelf

This week The PopCult Bookshelf looks at two books from local creators. One is just published, while the other is seeking funds for completion.

10014937_1641471609419801_7119415253142340742_oDavid Synn’s book of Poetry, Art of Disillusionment, was just published this week. You can order it from Amazon, or track down David through his Facebook page to see where you can get a signed copy. That’s also where you can find samples of David’s poetry. This is the first book published under the Empty Glass Records imprint, and it’s a great beginning.

If you watch or listen to Radio Free Charleston, you may know David as a musician. His keyboards have been part of all of our shows since episode 98, over five years ago.

davidHe’s performed on the show solo and as a member of Godmode Broadway and StytchNTyme. Earlier this year he released a terrific solo album that I have played extensively on the Radio Free Charleston streaming show on New Appalachian Radio.

Needless to say, I’m a fan. Once I get my hands on a copy of his book, I’ll post a review here, but for now, take this as a “heads up” that it’s out there. Just as I posted this, word came that David will be signing his book Friday, July 31st at Taylor Books, starting at 6 PM.

qlipxy30unyo3vwqzrb0Danny Boyd is an even older friend, and he has started an IndieGoGo campaign to finish work on SALT, his sequel to last year’s graphic novel, CARBON. This book will, like CARBON, combine elements of science fiction, fantasy, political commentary and adventure to create a cautionary tale about the cavalier attitudes that Mountain State politicians have toward the environment.

There are some great rewards with this campaign. If you want a pre-publication copy of the graphic novel, it’s only twenty-five bucks. Higher levels include other rewards like copies of CARBON, Danny’s films that he made for Troma, a “thank you” in print, Boyd’s Documentary on DVD about salt production in the Kanawha Valley, tickets to a Landau Eugene Murphy show, a chance to be a character in the book and if you kick in two grand, Danny will come to you, personally to speak, do a book signing, screen his movies, work as a casino-style greeter for a party or do light housekeeping. I may have imagined those last two.

If you want to learn more about SALT, watch the video and follow the link in the Widget below.

The Marx Toy Convention In Wheeling, Happening This Weekend: June 19-20

The PopCult Toybox

Kruger Street Toy and Train Museum, photo by Mark Wolfe

Ah, June, that special time of year when an older man’s fancy turns toward the toys of his youth, or something.

In years past, June has meant two trips up North to Wheeling to take in MEGO Meet and The Marx Toy Convention, but this year Wheeling bade farewell to MEGO Meet, which has scampered off to Skokie Illinois where they had their fun a couple of weekends ago. However, we still have the rich history of The Marx Toy Company to celebrate and that is coming up this weekend.

The 50th Anniversary Johnny West

This year, for the first time, your PopCulteer and his lovely wife will attend both days of the Marx Toy Convention and partake of the full convention, which takes place at Kruger Street Toy and Train Museum in Wheeling, with after hours events on Saturday at The Marx Toy Museum in Moundsville. On Friday night we will celebrate the life of Noah Coop, the brilliant toy customizer who passed away last October.

The festivities include tons of vendors selling all manner of Marx Toy Company products. There will be a special section of the dealers area devoted “JohnnyCon”, the toy convention-within-a-toy convention that will mark the 50th anniversary of Johnny West. Also marking Johnny West’s golden anniversary is a huge exhibit on the top floor of the museum, curated by Scott Stewart, who will also be speaking on the history of Johnny West.

The JoeLanta Jam Band on The RFC MINI SHOW

David Lane and Mike Gardner

David Lane and Mike Gardner

The RFC MINI SHOW returns this week with two full performances by The JoeLanta Jam Band. Snippets of these were show back in our big JoeLanta 2015 round-up video, but, by popular demand, we now bring you the entire songs.

JoeLanta, of course, is the annual gathering of devotees of the original 12″ GI Joe, held every year in Atlanta Georgia. Now including the Great Atlanta Toy Show, JoeLanta is one of the most fun toy conventions in the country. All the proceeds go to benefit the Cody Lane Memorial Toy Museum, which will present hands-on play experiences and amazing action figure dioramas.

Alex Massey and Bambi Lynn

Alex Massey and Bambi Lynn

The JoeLanta Jam Band consists of our friends Radio Cult (Ricky Zhero, Bambi Lynn and Jeremy Slotin), teamed up with guest musicians from the world of GI Joe collecting. There are some very talented folks in the hobby, and their talents extend beyond customizing and building action figure dioramas.

In this edition of The RFC MINI SHOW you’ll get to hear David Lane, one of the JoeLanta organizers, handle lead vocals while master dioramist and model-building Mike Gardner tears it up o lead guitar on a cover of “Give Me Three Steps.” Later, Alex Massey, a high-school aged wunderkind of the diorama world, shows off his guitar chops, teaming with Radio Cult for “Detroit Rock City.”

Not many toy convention feature full-blown rock concerts in their conference rooms, and that’s just one of the things that makes JoeLanta so special.

Monday Morning Art: Country Livin’

Img_4307

This week’s art was started for an upcoming project, then pulled back because I didn’t like it, but now I sort of like it again, so I’m sharing it here. It’s a digital painting of trees on a farm. It’s a bit of an exercise in vacillation, which may be why I can’t really decide if I like it or not. Click to enlarge.
