1934056_10208994540727561_6806908197098384295_nOpening Thursday, March 24 is the return of the Dan Kehde comedy Bert Hellmunn Fights The Demons Of The Stage. During its debut a few years back I described it as a “brilliant commentary about the struggle between art and commerce.”

This Contemporary Youth Arts Company production follows the life of fictional plawright Bert Hellmunn as he and his agent consistently snatch commercial success from the jaws of artistic substance by creating such hits as “The Bare Facts”, “The Porn Shop Murders” and “Fluff”, to name but a few. Utilizing a split stage and only a few set pieces, Hellmunn quips his way through fifty years of growing tastelessness in the American stage, beginning with the dismal reading of his first, outlandishly dark drama in the basement of a Manhattan men’s store in the early 60’s, through the nudity of the seventies, the nostalgia of the eighties, the vacuousness of the nineties, patriotism of the 2000’s and, finally, theater goers current love affair with digital technology

Curtain is 8 PM on Thursday March 24, Friday March 25, Saturday March 26, and Thursday March 31, Friday April 1, and Saturday April 2. This producation takes place at CYAC’s home base, the WVSU Capitol Center Theater, 123 Summers Street, Charleston. Tickets are available at the door or by calling the WVSU Capitol Center Box Office at 304-342-6522 during regular business hours. Admission is $8 for Students, $15 for adults.

Joelanta and The Great Atlanta Toy Convention:Dioramas

The PopCult Toybox

Img_6812aThe dioramas at Joelanta and The Great Atlanta Toy Convention embody the true spirit of convention’s beneficiary, The Cody Lane Memorial Toy and Diorama Museum, a space dedicated to preserving the artistry and celebrating the educational value of creative play.

In the above video you can see all of our raw footage of the diorama room, set to music by Chuck Biel’s Punk Jazz (Chuck gave me permission to use this fantastic music).

Below you will find a rather large photo essay with pictures of almost every entry in the diorama and custom figure contest. Yesterday we posted a photo essay of Mike Gardner’s Route 66 diorama. You’ll see more of it in the video.

I do need to apologize for an unfortunate omission. The video we shot of Steve Bugg’s enormous Star Wars diorama (seen above right), which was set up in the dealer’s area, glitched and was not usable, so his remarkable display is not properly represented in the video. We have a few photos to lead off this photo essay, but I want to direct your attention to the Wanderlust Atlanta blog, which has more photos of Steve’s masterpiece. If more folks post photos and video of Steve’s work, we’ll link to it.

In the coming days the plan is to post all the panels from JoeLanta and The Great Atlanta Toy Convention, plus bonus videos of the dealer’s rooms and the parachute drop. Then we’ll post the big wrap-up video. For now, it’s the dioramas and customs. If you can identify any of the talented customizers who we did not name, please do so in the comments below.

If only we could have salvaged the video

You could just walk around this all day and find something new on each trip

Monday Morning Art: Dr. Sketchy’s Turns Five

Img_700301

Last night at Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School session a milestone was reached as the revolutionary life-drawing class marked five years in Charleston. The Riveting Roses provided six models and your PopCulteer worked long into the night to come up with digital paintings that were abstract enough not to get him in trouble with the Gazette-Mail over content. Click to enlarge and stay tuned to PopCult for news on the next edition of Dr. Sketchy’s and the next performance by The Riveting Roses.

JoeLanta and The Great Atlanta Toy Convention: Mike Gardner’s Diorama

Img_6859On Monday we are going to bring you video and a photo essay devoted to the amazing dioramas and custom figures we saw at JoeLanta and The Great Atlanta Toy Convention last week. But right now we’re going to present a bonus photo essay devoted to one huge diorama, Mike Gardner’s epic Route 66 diorama took up one entire corner of the diorama room and included dozens of figures and thousands of individual details and elements.

Buried within this grouping of a diner, a garage and a general store were such surprises and Easter eggs as a scene from Pulp Fiction, celebrity cameos, custom cars, riffs on classic movies and even Grant and Lee negotiating the terms of surrender at the end of the Civil War.

You will see plenty of video footage of Mike’s work later in the video, but we wanted to give you a sample of the talent and creativity on display at JoeLanta and The Great Atlanta Toy Convention, and also salute Mike for the awesome work he does. The level of detail is simply astonishing.

The diorama was so huge that we almost forgot to get a wide shot of it.

RFC and PopCult present JoeLanta 2016: Larry Hama on Storyboarding “Boardwalk Empire”

The PopCult Toybox

Larry boardLarry Hama gives us a detailed breakdown of storyboards he did for an action sequence in the hit HBO drama “Boardwalk Empire.” He breaks down the sequential narrative and discuses his interaction with the director and what it’s like working under a tight deadline. There is some strong language used in the script of the show.

The similarities between comic book art and storyboarding for film are many, and Larry walks us through this sequence much in the same way that he did for his classic GI Joe comic “Silent Interlude” last year. Recorded at JoeLanta and The Great Atlanta Toy Convention on March 13, 2016.

Look for more panels from JoeLanta and The Great Atlanta Toy Convention here in PopCult all weekend long. Technical issues are slowing us down a bit, but keep checking. It’ll all turn up here soon.

Lee and Rudy’s attempt to address the entire history of Saturday Morning Cartoons in two thirty-minute programs sprawls into a second week. That’s at 8 PM Friday night. You can tune in at the AIR website or listen to it in that handy little widget floating above this paragraph.

Word Association with Lee and Rudy can be heard Friday nights at 8PM, with replays Satruday at 1:30 PM and Sunday at 9 PM.

Random Notes

It’s nose-to-the-grindstone time as your PopCulteer attempts to fling himself back into his routines after making two big trips in less than a month. Here we go…

Neil Zaza and Trielement at The Glass

Guitar wizard extraordanaire, Neil Zaza, returns to the Empty Glass Friday night with our own local prog-rock goliaths,Trielement providing support.

This will be one of Neil’s final US concerts before he heads out on a three month overseas tour starting in China.

Neil’s guitar playing has defined modern day instrumental guitar the world over. His melodic compositions have not only changed the way musicians play, but what audiences demand out of their guitar heroes. We have been very lucky to see Neil perform locally in the past, and it’s fantastic to have him back in town again.

nz-charlestonDr. Sketchy’s Returns

Image2This Sunday Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art Show returns after their long Winter hiatus and presents The Riveting Roses posing for life drawing and photography at WVSU EDC (AKA DigiSo) at 6 PM. It’s ten dollars to attend and have the lovely ladies strike poses for you to preserve for posterity in the artistic medium of your choice.

In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, Dr. Sketchy’s is a DIY figure drawing session that aims to bring the life-drawing experience to the masses. For the lowdown, let’s go to the PR: “Can you only draw stick figures? Are you a professional artist? Or are your skills somewhere in-between? Who cares?  If you like to draw, Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School doesn’t care what your skill level is! Grab your art supplies, and join us for a night of Dames, Drinking and Drawing with fun, contests and prizes. Our burlesque figure drawing is open to everyone 18 and over. BYOB to anyone 21+.“

Dr. Sketchy’s is the brainchild of New York artist Molly Crabapple and our local Charleston chapter is spearheaded by Chase Henderson and Gorillafoot Productions.
