Today’s PopCult Bookshelf is not a review. It’s a plug for a very cool book I haven’t gotten my hands on yet. The legendary Black Diamond, Theron Denson, has released his autobiography, and he will be performing at The Empty Glass Friday night, where he will sing and sign copies of his book, “Black Diamond: The Real Illusion,” written with Scott Allen Nollen.

Black Diamond will be at The Glass with his band, comprised of top Nashville musicians at 10 PM. Tickets are ten dollars and are available in advance. Check out this interview from the Definitely Loud Podcast

1098151_546382112092247_629537795_nThis is a rare Charleston performance by BD with a live backing band, and you’ll want to bring some extra money to buy a copy of his book.Speaking of the book, here’s the PR blurb…

“Meet Brother Love… What do a white Jewish man from Brooklyn and a bald black man from Charleston, West Virginia, have in common? One listen to the voice of Theron Denson will answer that question. From humble beginnings to homelessness, from living with the Pointer Sisters to singing on the street corners of Washington, 1236801_557105014353290_1025246205_nDC, and from performing to patrons in pizza joints to millions of viewers via national television, Theron Denson has followed his dream of becoming the Black Diamond, the world’s only African American Neil Diamond tribute artist. This heavily illustrated biography, based on 150 personal interviews, covers Theron’s triumphs, tragedies and sheer fortitude as he continually beats the odds, traveling from coast to coast while using his vocal gift to transform himself into the Black Diamond. Theron hopes that, like his show, this book will allow people to “blend” and forget about their differences for a few hours. For a man who wishes us all to celebrate our similarities, he is a truly unique human being. He is entertaining, thought-provoking and inspirational.”

Friday night is the night for music and literature at The Empty Glass. It’s a chance to see one of Charleston’s true gems shine, and learn his life story, too.
