Black Friday, Mother Nang Returns And More Affordable Art

The PopCulteer
November 27, 2009

Producing a column for Black Friday is a bit of a daunting task. Most people aren’t going to read it until Monday, if at all. I could go the low-brow route and use foul language and post NSFW videos while I can get away with it, but that’d be too easy. Instead I will go on as though nothing unusual is happening and plug the cool weekend events. So just read this PopCulteer and move along…nothing to see here.

The Dang Return Of Mother Nang

Old friends of Radio Free Charleston, the newly-reunited Mother Nang take the stage at the newly-refurbished and renamed “The Boulevard Tavern” Saturday night at 9:30 PM.

You may remember a couple of months ago, Mother Nang played an informal “preview” show at LiveMix Studio (I wrote about it here). You can see a snippet of that performance in RFC 83, conveniently posted below, for your amusement.

You can also see some vintage Nang from the early 1990s on episode 9 of RFC.

This should be a great night. The Boulevard Tavern just opened last week, and it’s a fantastic venue. It’s in the spot where Legends used to be, but for those of us who are a bit longer in tooth, that building will always be “The Levee.” In fact, I think the footage of Mother Nang from RFC 9 was shot at The Levee.

Mel and I made it out to The Boulevard Tavern Wednesday night to see Rubber Soul, and we had a wonderful tiime. My first thought walking through the door for the first time in probably seventeen years was “Wow! It’s like The Levee, only clean!” It looks like we have another first-rate musical venue in Charleston. The place was packed with friendly faces and it was great seeing our old buddy Dave Thomas behind the bar. Dave was half of The Blind Blue Leper Society, the very-first in-studio guest on the Radio Free Charleston radio show twenty years ago this month.

Mother Nang, of course, are also longtime RFC pals, Spencer Elliott, Brian Young, Jay Lukens and Deron Sodaro. They’re still making vital, energetic alternative music that will thrill and seduce your ears. You ought to check them out.

And try the pizza bread at The Boulevard Tavern. It’s really good.

More Affordable Art

Wednesday The PopCulteer brought you a preview of the “Under A Bill” show, opening today at The Good News Mountaineer Garage during Art Walk. Technical issues prevented me from posting all the photos I took, so here’s the rest of the photos I took last Sunday when the show was being hung. Brain fart issues prevented me from mentioning that Marshhouse has three very cool rock posters in the show, too.

See! Cool rock posters from Marshhouse Art.

Keith Allen.

Amy Williams.

Joe Bolyard

Mark Wolfe

Laura Chapman

Devon Woodrum

There’s also cheap work by some guy who was too dumb to know that you don’t point a flash directly at a reflective surface.

Something About “Mary”

Don’t forget, the CYAC rock opera “Mary” opens tonight. Watch the latest Radio Free Charleston for a sneak preview, recorded just last Monday night during rehearsals. You can see it right below.

This year’s production of “Mary” opens at 8 p.m. Friday at the Capitol Center Theater, 123 Summers St. Additional shows are 8 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday and 8 p.m. Dec. 3-5 Tickets are $9.50 for adults and $5.50 for students and seniors.
Cool Comic Of The Week

I’m not going to write about this. If you can’t tell why this is cool from the title, you’ll just have to trust me. Click the image to order “Jesus Hates Zombies” (also featuring “Lincoln Hates Werewolves”).

Coming Attractions

I am working on a critique of the “Hallelujah” sculpture in front of the Clay Center. Look for it in the next few days, along with video, art and maybe even another episode of RFC.

Sweet! Thanks for covering the “Under a Bill” show! THere are still two more chances to purchase more affordable art at Good News Mountaineer Garage, today and next Saturday. w00t!

I can’t wait to see your critique of “Hallelujah.” I am excited to see what you have to say about it.

The big quantities of essays writers accomplish the custom papers reffering to this topic. So that is a good opportunity to buy essays and research paper just about this post.

Note from Rudy: This is a spam comment, and the links have been deleted, but I’m leaving it here because I am amused by the idea of “big quantities” of essays being written about Mother Nang.
