It’s another jam-packed weekend, and your PopCulteer is going to try and bring you the highlights of everything cool going on in the area. We are sure to miss a few events, so please feel free to chime in with some comments if you know of anything else happening in town.
We’ve Been Eating Gamera
First up, we have the inagural MOVIE NIGHT at Kanawha Players Theater. Friday at 10 PM, which gives you plenty of time to check out the Laser Shows at the Clay Center or Time and Distance and Beggar’s clan at Live on the Levee, you can settle in at KP for a showing of the 1965 classic, “Gamera the Invincible.”
An atomic explosion awakens Gamera–a giant, fire-breathing turtle monster–from his millions of years of hibernation. Enraged at being roused from such a sound sleep, he takes it out on Tokyo. In addition to being really neat, Gamera is also filled with turtle meat.
Three bucks gets you in the door to witness the terror of the terrapin. Concessions will be available, as well as a 50/50 raffle.”Gamera” will have a short intermission in the middle. The movie runs 86 minutes, so the show should be over around 11:30.
This could be a fun movie series and it’s also a fundraiser for KP. Next week the plan is to show “Nosferatu.”
Laser Beam Me
The Laser Light shows continue at The Electric Sky Theater at The Clay Center. Four bucks (for each show), two shows a day. This is your chance to zone out in a dark and listen to really cool music while dancing lasers paint cool animations in the air for you to see. This is the last weekend for this limited engagement, and there will be NO DRUG TESTING, so come and enjoy.

6 p.m. Laser Vinyl
Classic album cuts from bands that they’ve played on Rock 105 for the last thirty five years.
7 p.m. Electro Laze
Techno wizardry or lame disco music? You be the judge.
Saturday, May 31
6 p.m. Laser Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon
Frequently ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time, Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon” is combined with the full prism of lasers in this show.
7 p.m. Laser Pink Floyd The Wall
Come to see the iconic rock band’s album merged with laser media with hits like “Another Brick in the Wall” and “Comfortably Numb.”
Time And Distance On The River’s Edge
RFC guests, Time And Distance headline Live on the Levee tonight, with the always cool (and soon to be on RFC) Beggar’s Clan in support. It’s great seeing more young, vital area artists getting to perform at Live on the Levee this year, and this show is sure to be one of the most exciting nights of the summer. It’s a free show, and it kicks off at 6:30 PM.
You can see Time And Distance performing their song, “That Girl” on this week’s RFC (which is also loaded with tons of other cool stuff that you can read about HERE). This performance of “That Girl” is not to be confused with any other newspaper’s “exclusive” video of Time And Distance performing “That Girl.”
More Free Music Friday
There’s a ton of it. Jim Snyder and Gary Reynolds will perform at Hawk’s Nest Lounge at Hawk’s Nest State Park in Ansted at 6:30 PM. The Carpenter Ants will take the stage at Taylor Books at 7:30 PM. Mark Scarpelli and I’m guessing a guitarist to be named later will have a piano/guitar duel at Timothy’s, below The Quarrier Diner, at 9 PM. also at 9 PM, Dugan Carter and Friends bring the jazz to Bruno’s on Leon Sullivan Way.
Zappa Sideman Sighting
Keneally-Bendian-Lunn is a trio that includes star guitarist and former Frank Zappa sideman Mike Keneally. They will appear at The Empty Glass tonight at 11 PM. The cover is fifteen bucks and worth every penny. These are world-class, internationally renown musicians.

Free Music includes the legendary Spurgie Hankins Band at The Bluegrass Kitchen at 7 PM, while Mountain Shakedown will be at Taylor Books at 7:30 PM. Also, Chuck Biel’s School for Rok and Jazz will be cover-free at The Empty Glass from 7 PM to 11 PM. This Edition features Cliff Hayes and Dillon Gaal and Jimmy Holley, accompanied by Chuck Biel, Will Taylor and Sean Sydnor.
The Laser shows conclude at The Clay Center with a double shot of Pink Floyd at 6 PM and 7 PM. Admission is four bucks for each hour.
At 7 PM, join the Nationally acclaimed and award winning WV Kids on First S.T.A.R.S as they Rock Bop and Doo Wop at the Alban Arts and Conference Center in St. Albans. The production, set in “Little Katie’s” Bedroom, features the songs that she requests from the great DJ’s of the 50’s and 60’s. Watch as her requests come to life, right before your eyes….and they take you back to an era filled with great family fun! Ten bucks gets you in to relive the olden days of great music.
At 9 PM the RFC crew will be on hand to capture Blue Million and The Nanker Phelge at The Thirteenth Lane Taproom at Dunbar Lanes. A measly five dollars is all it takes to get in to witness these two killer rock bands–both veterans of Radio Free Charleston–lay waste to the stage with their clever and incisive lyrics and solid musicianship.
Tri-Con is also Saturday.It runs from 10 AM to 6 PM at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena in Huntington, and admission is ten dollars. They have some great guests like WWE Legend Mick Foley and writer Gail Simone, but your PopCulteer is going to give it a miss this year. After JoeLanta last March and with MEGO Meet coming up next week and The Marx Toy Convention two weeks after that, driving an hour for a comic con just doesn’t seem like that exciting a proposal.
