Stuff To Do

We’re still not fully functional here at PopCult Central, so this week we’re just going to bring you a few flyers and tell you where some bands are playing, although we don’t have cover charges or start times for everyone. Bear with us, please…

The big thing this weekend for your Popculteer is Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, which is shifting over to Uncork and Create this month for a celebration of marriage for everyone! Proceeds from the tip jar go to help pay for a trip to DC for a happy young couple, who cannot yet tie the knot here, to get married.

Another biggie is HarraH and The AK 40 Sexuals tonight at The Sound Factory…

Friday

Keep in mind that the Charly West Blues Fest is happening tonight and tomorrow at Haddad Riverfront park, and traffic downtown will be the kind that raises your blood pressure. Leave early and try to be patient if you’re headed that way.

The Boatmen will be at The Boulevard Tavern. Tofujitsu will be at Taylor Books. Sam’s Uptown Cafe plays host to Beggar’s Clan.

Saturday

Heart of Appalachia Roller Derby hosts the First Settlement Derby Dames’ Hades Ladies of Marietta, Ohio, in a benefit bout for the the West Virginia Chapter of the American Heart Association! Doors open at 5PM, action at 6PM. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 5-12 in advance. $12/$6 at the door. The bout takes place at the West Virginia National Guard Armory (Coonskin Dr.),with an afterparty at Vandalia Grill

The No Pants Players, West Virginia’s premier improv comedy troupe, returns this Saturday, May 18, to the Alban Arts and Conference Center (65 Olde Main Street, St. Albans, WV) and will bring a few friends along to add to the hilarity—an opening performance by Jeff Bukovinsky’s Adult Improv Class and a brand new No Pants Player will be introduced. This will be an “All-Ages” show, so the whole family is invited. The opening act will begin at 6:50 PM and the No Pants Players will take the stage at 7 PM. Tickets are on sale now and are $8 for kids and $10 for adults.

Tofujitsu will perform at the East End Mains Street Bazaar, from Noon until 3 PM.

Spurgie Hankins Band will put on a FREE SHOW at The So0und Factory, starting at 9 PM.

Comparsa will be at The Empty Glass starting at 10 PM, for the usual sliding cover.

The Bark-O-Loungers with opening act, Michael Pushkin, will be at Sam’s Uptown Cafe, starting at 10 PM.

Sunday

Chris and Denise Chaber, of The Empty Glass, are hosting their 5th annual benefit for JDRF, and we want to make this the biggest one yet! As some of you know, Jordan, their 9 year old son, is a diabetic, and they need your help. There is a JDRF Walk at the capitol starting at Noon. If you want to be a part of it, you can go to JDRF.org and find the team “Walking For Jordan” and register.

Later on that night, The Glass will have live music starting at 8:00 PM, and going on all night long. There will also be a silent auction on items donated from local businesses and artists. All proceeds made at the door, and from the auction, will go to JDRF to help find a cure. There is a minimum donation of $7.00 at the door.

The musical lineup includes: Donnie Smith @ 8:00, Comparsa @ 9:00, Spurgie Hankins Band @ 10:00, 600lbs of Sin @ 11:00, Tommy’s Triple Threat Blues Revue @ 12:00 and Beggars Clan @ 1:00.

PopCult is slowly returning to what passes for “normal.”  Check back next week.

    Thanks, Carl!

I encourage anyone with a local show that I missed to plug it here in the comments. I didn’t get a chance to cover everything this week.
