Sunday Evening Videos: Thelonius Monk’s Birthday

In honor of what would have been the legendary Bebop keyboardist’s 92nd birthday, here are some clips of the Monk in action. Above you see Thelonius at the piano, along with Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, Larry Gales on bass and Ben Riley on drums, performing his signature tune, “Blue Monk” in Oslo, Norway, in 1966. A Bad Typing Hand Means Lots Of Links!

Yet another hectic week, along with a hand affliction, has caused us to once again truncate The PopCulteer. This week we’re going to focus on some cool weekend events that you should check out.

LiveMix Studio

Located on the fifth floor of The Quarrier Building, this intimate performance venue plys host to Bob Thompson and Duo Divertido Saturday night. This is part of The Charleston Jazz Series, A minimum $25 donation gets you in the door for an evening of sublime jazz music, enhanced by th special vibe that can only be had at LiveMix Studio. The show runs from 8 PM to 11 PM.

Next Tuesday, also at LiveMix, Brookly-based singer/songwriter, Jonah Smith, brings his his two-piece band to Quarrier Street. You can check out Bill Lynch’s brief interview with Jonah here. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Call (304) 415-2947 for more info.

Sunday Evening Videos: It’s Johnny’s Birthday (Almost)

On October 9, John Lennon would have been 69. In honor of the snicker-worthy anniversary of his birth, here’s some primo Lennon. Above you see John performing “Instant Karma,” one of two John Lennon songs that were referenced in the song “Your Move/Seen All Good People” by YES. Coincidentally, the drummer seen in this video, Alan White, would later join YES, proving that what goes around does indeed come around.

A Quick One

We’ve got a short PopCulteer this week, due to some connectivity issues, so please bear with us as we hit the high points and leave the details for later.

HallowEast Beckons!

HallowEast, the big four-day Halloween celebration in the East End of Charleston kicked off with a press conference last Tuesday. The big news is that Sam Trammell (right), the star of the HBO series “True Blood,” will be in town as part of the festivities. There will also be a special “ArtMares” art exhibit that I’m honored to be part of, as well as a cool Vampire murder mystery, hosted by Bluegrass Kitchen, and tons of other cool stuff, climaxing with the Halloween Hootenanny at The Empty Glass. I’m going to spotlight these events and the many others that are tied into HallowEast in the next few weeks. Until then, check out the HallowEast website for more info.
