Captain Action News Out Of Chicago

The sleek new CA packaging

I don’t need to go into the long history of Captain Action and PopCult here. I’ve been writing about the toy since my first month blogging.

Things are progressing very nicely with the new revival of the classic 1960’s action figure line. The good Captain will continue to stalk toy store shelves and he will continue to have cool uniform sets that will allow him to be dressed as classic super heroes, all thanks to Captain Action Enterprises and Round 2 Corp.

However, out of the C2E2 Expo in Chicago last weekend, we have even more exciting info on new uniforms, new figures, a new comic book series and an animated show.

A Balanced Review

If you’ve been reading PopCult the last couple of weeks, you know that I’ve been pimping the heck out of The Alban Arts Center production of Edward Albee’s “A Delicate Balance.”

I’m close to the production. My fiancee is in it. Friends are involved with it. I have a fondness for The Alban. Due to my biases, I can’t claim to write an objective review.

However, the review published by The Charleston Gazette can hardly claim objectivity, either. Autumn Hopkins, the reviewer, turned in one of the most brutal, and I would say unfair, reviews I’ve ever seen published in Charleston.

She apparently lets her intense hatred of the play cloud her mission of judging how well this local production deals with the work. If you know going in that you hate a play, there are two professional ways to handle it. First, you can decline the assignment. I’ve done it, and continue to do it when I don’t want to crank out a hatchet job just for the sake of being a jerk.

Attack Of The Return Of Chillers

The PopCult Bookshelf

Danny Boyd, fighting with GI Joe to see who can get mentioned more in PopCult

This week’s book recommendation is not exactly a review. It would be disingenuous to claim to be objective when writing about a book that includes the work of so many friends, some of them dating back thirty years, so you’ll just have to take that into account while I plug one more book signing by Daniel Boyd and his gang for “Chillers 2,” his new graphic novel.

Danny and company will be at Taylor Books this Friday, from 7 to 9 PM, signing copies of “Chillers” and possibly some other works.

“Chillers Volume Two” is yet another collection of horror-themed morality tales, based on Danny’s cult classic 1987 movie, “Chillers.” Behind a great cover by Bill Richardson, we are treated to stories written by Boyd, Richardson, William Bitner, Jason Pell, Robert Tinnell, Frank Larnerd, Gary Reed and Katarina Dedicova.

The black-and-white presentation pays homage to the Warren Magazines and Eerie Publications that Boyd grew up reading. Each story tells the tales of evil-doers who wind up on Peterr Jesus’ bus to Hell.

“Chillers Volume Two” is great fun fo the fan of the classic horror mags of the 1970s, and it’s a wonderful local project. You ought to come out and support the local talent at the book signing this Friday.

A Bounty Of Cool Action Figures Coming Your Way

Ceasar Romero as The Joker

Big news from Figures Toy Company last week as they announced a huge slate of big time licenses, including Batman, Conan The Barbarian, Evel Knievel and more. FTC started out more than twenty years ago as a mail-order retailer, and eventually began manufacturing wrestling items, like licensed WWE replica belts, and action figures that recalled the heyday of the classic MEGO line.

After having a lot of success last year with 8″ and 12″ figures based on KISS, Figures Toy Company has decided to go all-in with an impressive list of new licenses for 2013.
