Every Tuesday I tell you how great it is to tune into The AIR and today that’s true again as we present you with a mostly-new episode of Radio Free Charleston! To listen to The AIR, you simply have to point your cursor over and tune in at the website, or you could just stay here, and listen to the cool embedded player found elsewhere on this page.
You can hear Radio Free Charleston Tuesdays at 10 AM and 10 PM, with boatloads of replays throughout the week.
This week we open our show with new music from Charleston’s Minor Swing, and then bring you two hours loaded with great local, independent and cult music, plus this week we have an extra mission.
In our third hour, and a little of our first, we are celebrating the life of Brian Young, an RFC Big Shot whom we lost last December. Brian was an incredible musician, a very talented filmmaker, a great husband and father, and one of the best friends a person could have. As I’ve said in this blog before, Brian Young was one of the most consequential people in my life. He was my right hand when I was producing RFC for WVNS radio. We collaborated on projects for over thirty years. He is the reason that Radio Free Charleston was revived as a video program in 2006, and still survives in its current form.
He was even there when Melanie and I had our first kiss…and he timed it. It was over seven minutes, according to Brian.
A celebration of Brian’s life will be held Friday, July 24, from 6:30 PM to 9:30 at Short Story Brewery on Summers Street. Brian’s most recent band, the New Old Souls, will perform, and all of the people who loved Brian are welcome to attend.
If all goes according to plan, I will have a new video episode of RFC, dedicated to Brian’s music and video work, ready to premiere in PopCult Wednesday or Thursday.
While editing this week’s show, I realized that sometime over the weekend, I’d bitten my tongue, and it left me with a slight lisp. I can’t help but think that Brian would have found my voice this week to be hilarious. That makes me smile…even with a sore tongue.
