Last week, the PopCult Bookshelf wandered away from the shelf and took a look at the magazine rack. This week, we’re going to wander a bit further and take a look at two exceptional pieces of journalism which can be found online.

First up, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the remarkable three-part series that ran in the Charleston Gazette this week by Douglas Imbrogno. His touching portrait of the homeless person most people knew as Elizabeth should be required reading by anyone who ever looked down on their fellow man or woman who happened to be down on their luck.

Crystal Bright and Volt 9000 on RFC 185

Radio Free Charleston 185, “Neverending Fight Shirt,” features music from Crystal Bright and The Silver Hands and Volt 9000, and showcases the work of RFC Big Shot, Frank Panucci.

This is our first show back after nearly a month’s hiatus due to an exploding battery back-up on the Popcult/Radio Free Charleston computing desk.  The resulting surge took out all our computers and we’ve just now gotten back up to speed.  Happily, we’re back with a really strong show with two great musical guests and loads of new work from our resident animator/Big Shot, Frank Panucci.

Sunday Evening Videos: Volt 9000

One of the musical guests on Radio Free Charleston 185, which you can see here in PopCult on Monday, is Volt 9000, a Canadian Industrial/Electronica duo who occasionally collaborate with RFC’s Frank Panucci on animated music videos.

Conopoly,” the new Volt 9000 album (and their first label release) comes out this week, and features the song, “Toybox,” which you will see tomorrow. Tonight we’re going back to the band’s previous two videos animated by Frank, just to whet your appetite.
