The PopCulteer
June 7, 2013

Your PopCulteer is heading north to MEGO Meet this weekend but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be plenty of stuff for you to check out back here in Charleston and other surrounding areas.

The Moonstruck Battle of the Bands takes place on Friday and Saturday, and even though it involves a “Battle of the Bands,” something I do not approve of, and also involves camping, something which has no appeal to this PopCulteer, there is an amazing line-up of bands, so check out their PR: “The event will occur in the Civil War Section, the oldest section of the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, and the Civil War Courtyard. Camping is on our 300 acre farm. Tickets purchased in advance online are $20 and if purchased at the gate $25.

BATTLE:
Friday, June 7, 2013 and Saturday, June 8, 2013 – Moonstruck Battle of the Bands from 6:00 p.m. until Midnight

BANDS COMPETING:
The Renfields Punk
Cult of Dionysis AKA Metalcult Heavy Metal
Scarlett Blacke Heavy Metal
KLNZR Heavy Metal
Insanatarium Heavy Metal
Dead Face Down Heavy Metal
Under Social Rock
In the Company of Wolves Rock
From Ashes to Embers (FATE) Rock
Five Forty Two (5:42) Rock
Black Lung Rock

Your weekend ticket includes camping available on the farm from Friday, June 7, 2013 at noon until Sunday, June 9, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. with full access to Moonstruck Battle of the Bands.”

It’s a great couple of days of music, if you ignore the competition crap and the fact that camping is involved.

Friday

Friday’s free music includes Mother’s Nature at 6:30 PM, bringing classic rock and R&B to the opening ceremony of the West Virginia Special Olympics Summer Games. That’s at Haddad Riverfront Park. A few blocks down Capitol Street, Sasha Collette will be performing from 7:30 to 9:30 PM at Taylor Books. Bruno’s on Leon Sullivan Way will have Little Joe and His One Man Band at 9 PM. If you want cover-free comedy, head to The Sound Factory at 10 PM for The Last Laugh, featuring stars of Charleston’s growing stand-up scene.

Music with a cover charge includes C2J2 and Casey Litz and The Company Store at Sam’s Uptown Cafe at 10 PM, with a $5 cover. Also at 10 PM with a $5 cover, The Hillbilly Gypsies will be at the Boulevard Tavern. 11 PM sees the folk music of Joe Taxi at The Empty Glass, with the usual $5/$7 sliding cover charge.

Saturday

Free music includes Spencer Elliott and Sean Richardson alternating sets at the Bluegrass Kitchen from 7 to 9 PM and Marium Bria at Taylor Books from 7:30 to 9:30 PM.

Five bucks gets you in the door at The Sound Factory for a 10 PM show by RFC 184 guests, Time and Distance and Motion Theater, who will appear on RFC 188, in July.

InFormation will be performing at 9:30 PM at the Fairplain Yacht Club in Ripley, with a $5 cover. The Amazing Automatics will be at Sam’s Uptown Cafe at 10 PM, also with a $5 cover.

That’s it for this truncated PopCulteer. Check PopCult next week for tons of MEGO Meet coverage, plus our regular features, and while you’re at it, be sure to watch RFC 185, it’s a damned good show…
