Back when your PopCulteer invaded The New York International Toy Fair last February, one of the toy lines that stuck out was Funko’s partnership with several UK-based designers and other international toy freaks, Vinyl Sugar. This project is birthing forth four new lines of collectible toys that should start showing up in stores this summer. Here’s a preview photo essay with a mix of publicity images and photos we shot ourselves:
Vinyl Idolz – What happens when the twisted minds over at Evil Corp get together with Vinyl Sugar? A mash-up of pop culture with a wicked British bent. Feast your covetous eyes on these new Vinyl Idolz. Tall, skinny and with a uniquely British cartoony style, confirmed licenses include “Back to the Future,” “Ghostbusters,” “The Walking Dead,” “Say Anything,” “Dodgeball,” “Napoleon Dynamite,” “Young Frankenstein,” “Seinfeld,”Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” and “The Big Lebowski.”
Dorbz – This exclusive Dorbz collection is for collectors young and old. Opting for painted designs over sculpt, these pint-sized rascals will weasel their way into your heart as surely as they’ll find their way onto your shelf. These are, if it’s possible, even rounder and cuter little plastic figures. Available in three sizes, Dorbz have already made plans for figures based on Disney, Marvel Comics, and DC Comics properties.
Vinyl Vixens – Vinyl Vixens: a brand new collection of dreamy daring. Capturing all the spark, sass and attitude of your favorite female heroes and villains. The only figures shown for this sexy female action figure line so far are three Batman Villains, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy. Reportedly they’re already for sale in some Hot Topic stores.
Super Deluxe Vinyl – For the most conspicuous collector a rare treat- Run your mind’s eye and hands along the supple signature lines of larger-than-life Super Deluxe collection. They are quite simply, art personified. These guys will be huge and expensive. So far they’ve only announced three figures, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, and Deadpool, all from Marvel Comics.
The PR says “Vinyl Sugar is the illegitimate love child between Funko and some of the best free-wheeling designers from the back streets of London, the boutiques of Harajuku and the galleries of New York City. Vinyl Sugar- because you crave it!”
From what we’ve seen, they may be right.
