Today we’re looking at five DVD or Blu Ray picks that you can dole out to the unsuspecting. This all PopCultury stuff, you know, like the name of the blog says. Amazon links are included, but you might want to try to buy local first.
Regular Show has become one of the two titans of Cartoon Network. With instant kid appeal and plenty of material for their parents, and anyone in between, this show about two slackers working in a park is a true gem of surreal testosterone-fueled excess. Giant muscle cars fly down out of the sky, demons and wizards casually stroll by, and universe-threatening cataclysms are pretty much the norm. Fans of the show will love Regular Show: the Complete First and Second Seasons set available on Blu-ray (2-discs) and DVD (3-discs). This release includes all 40 episodes from seasons 1 and 2 plus over 2 hours of hilarious bonus content inspired by the creator. The series stars two best friends and park groundskeepers, Mordecai and Rigby, who also happen to be a bluebird and a raccoon. Their attempts to escape their everyday boredom take them to fantastical extremes. After you get this set, punch in the old Super Nintendo unlimted lives code to uncover a hidden film.
The other titan of Cartoon Network is Adventure Time. What seems to be a delightful adventure series about a boy and his dog in a magical candy land is actually an intense, post-apocalyptic mind game with heavy themes and a complex mythology. Season Two is out now on DVD and Blu Ray and includes all 26 episodes from season two with commentary and a few short features. It’s two DVDs or one Blu Ray. It’s also the coolest show on television at the moment.
Porkchop 3D (2D version) wraps up the Porkchop trilogy in epic fashin as Porkchop is back and ready to exact his bloody vengeance on a new batch of teens. Along with his mutant lunatic daughter, PIG GIRL, Porkchop is ready to slice his way through over 20 teens with chainsaws, machetes, spears, and anything he can find! Packed to the gills with T&A, jokes, redneck nonsense, gore, and more jokes, this is Charleston’s Horror Mogul, Eamon Hardiman’s, slasher “Citizen Kane.” Available as a DVD-R.
If you meet forest gnomes disguised as zombies, dig up a mysterious old journal filled with secrets and ciphers, or encounter spooky hijinks at the local condemned convenience store, you’ve just crossed over into.Gravity Falls, where there’s always something peculiar going on! Defying all expectations, The Disney Channel came up with a cartoon series that’s almost hip enough to be on Cartoon Network. Twelve-year-old twins Dipper and Mabel Pines explore the oddest spot on the map, Gravity Falls. Shipped off to spend the summer with their gruff Great Uncle (“Grunkle”) Stan – who runs the tacky tourist trap, “Mystery Shack” – the kids uncover mysterious surprises, unsurpassed silliness, and supernatural shenanigans lurking around every corner of the deceptively sleepy little town. Gravity Falls: Six Strange Tales is a one-DVD collection, packed with over two hours of hilarious adventures, irreverent humor, and quirky, unforgettable characters, Gravity Falls: Six Strange Tales is a surprisingly fun series from Disney.
Ryan Murphy’s AMERICAN HORROR STORY is an amazing achievment in television: Part mini-series; part anthology, part repetory show, each season tells a new story, complete with a beginning, a middle and an end, and a cast that puts most TV shows to shame. Season two, American Horor Story: Asylum, told a dark tale of a Catholic-run insane asylum. The sins of the past haunt the present at the notorious Briarcliff home for the criminally insane, ruled with an iron fist by Sister Jude. Forbidden desire and terrifying evil lurk around every corner…from alien abduction to demonic possession to a skin-wearing psychopath known as Bloody Face.
