Grim Trixter is a book of poetry by Brandy Leah Schwan. It would be easy to pigeonhole her work as “Goth Poetry,” but that easy label really doesn’t do justice to her work. It is dark, and ventures into Edgar Allen Poe territory more than a little, but Schwan brings a fresh perspective to the subject matter–that of an old soul in the midst of a young life. Her work is dark, sensual, mystic, and mysterious without being hackneyed or repetitive. If you have a taste for the macabre and want to hear an exciting new voice, check out her website, which is maintained by Brian Hatcher, a Charleston-based master of horror fantasy himself. You’ll find samples of her work, and information on how to buy the Grim Trixter book.
Month: April 2007 (Page 3 of 3)
We start off the month of April with an installment of “Pop Art Charleston” with a twist. This digitally-assaulted photograph of Summers Street sits atop a mirror-image, creating a kalidiscopic wonder for the eyes, or a mess, depending on your tastes in art.
Once again, click the photo for a larger view. And go here for the Monday Morning Art Store, and here for the PopCult store. Vote with your dollars! Is “Pop Art Charleston” a bold new direction, a cheesy way to recycle old works into T-Shirts, or am I just in a rut? Come on, it’s “one-dollar, one vote” just like in Logan County!
Actually, it’s a photo of Lee Street. Thanks to Charleston Charlie for catching that in the comments. Sometimes I assault these images so much I forget how they started out.
Be sure to check PopCult all day long for loads of really funny fake “news” stories! We’ve got all kinds of really hysterical items coming up about things like the new store coming to mall–Brickstreet–they sell bricks, get it? We’ll also talk about the Governor in drag, and the plan to build a pyramid on Charleston’s West side! Be sure to join in on the hilarity!
