ArtMares Still Scary After All These Years

Img_9323The PopCulteer
October 25, 2013

It’s time for ArtMares again! The art exhibit component of HallowEast which I have been lucky enough to be part of for five years now. This year the art show is happening at Contemporary Galleries (1210 Smith Street) in the third floor showroom. More than forty artists have their work on display and for sale. Half the proceeds go to East End Main Street and half to the artists.

Tonight is the big reception, from 6 PM to 11PM with live music from Sean Sydnor and plenty of adult beverages and things upon which you can nibble. Most of the artists will be on hand. Tip your bartender and it’ll go to EEMS.

Your PopCulteer took his camera to the opening Wednesday night, and I’m bringing you about 90% of the works in today’s photo essay. With so much art to see, there were a few pictures that were too dark or blurry to run. Please remember that my photos do not do justice to the original art, and that you should go to the exhibit to see it in person. This photo essay will be light on commentary because there was so much cool stuff to take in.

Let the ArtMares begin…

ZOMBIE TUTORIAL VIDEOS

zombie schoolSaturday both the HallowEast Run Like Hell Zombie 5 K Run and the HallowEast Zombie Walk are happening. In fact, they are going to collide somewhere around the intersection of Quarrier and Elisabeth Streets. Many people are planning to participate and they need to know how to look and act like a zombie.

As a public service, PopCult is happy to bring you a series of nine informative instructional videos to help you learn how to walk the walk and grunt the talk. Please watch and take notes. There will be a test later. Please note that most of these contain gory FX make up, and a couple have rough language, so maybe don’t watch these at work.

Madwoman of the Sacred Heart

The PopCult Bookshelf

“Madwoman of the Sacred Heart”
madwomsacheartby Alexandro Jodorowsky and Moebius
Humanoids
ISBN:978-1-59465-046-8
$29.95

Imagine a wicked satire of philosphy academia with a lot of sex, violence, surreal psuedo-Christian imagery, geo-political intrigue, a dash of Carlos Castaneda-style mysticism plus a mid-life-crisis and wish fulfillment thrown into the mix. Welcome to the world of Alexandro Jodorowsky.

“Madwoman of the Sacred Heart,” written by Jodorwsky with art by the legendary, Moebius, collects and translates three graphic albums originally published in France in 1992, 1993 and 1998. This is a superb work. That it has a cinematic quality is no surprise, given the extensive film work of both Jodorowsky and Moebius, but the disparate elements that blend so seamlessly make most attempts at describing in sound like a train wreck.

“Madwoman of the Sacred Heart” most assuredly is not that, but it does require a bit of a synopsis to explain. We meet Alan Mangel, a very popular philosophy professor at La Sorbonne University who seemingly has everything a man could want…until his 60th birthday.

Zombies Invade WVSU!

image001Thursday and Friday night at the new Skeen Black Box Theater in the Cole Complex at West Virginia State University, The undead will  trod the boards, all for a good cause. “Maul of the Dead” by Mitch Brian,is a fish out of water story about people trying to survive a zombie apocalypse in a mall. At least that’s what student Director Joshua Drew says.

“Maul of the Dead” will be presented Oct. 24 and 25 at 7:30 PM. and 11 PM. “It’s a funny, silly take on the ever popular world of zombies,” said Professor of Theatre Susan Marrash-Minnerly. “How can you not love a play about humans being trapped by zombies in a JC Penney store?”

This sounds like a load of fun. With a very low ticket price and a youthful, exhuberant cast and crew, “Maul of the Dead” looks to be a real Halloween treat. The 11 PM showings are perfect, not only to set the mood, but also so folks can attend other events and then head to the campus of WVSU for a fun and spooky nightcap.

“The intimate theater setting is sure to give the audience an up-close and personal interaction with zombies and survivors”, Promises Drew, Students are handling all major areas of production, and “that’s what makes this so exciting,” according to Minnerly.

Tickets, priced at a mere $3, are on sale at the door. All proceeds will be used to advance live theater on campus. “We are raising funds to make bigger and better productions here at WVSU. Live theater should be a top-of-mind entertainment option; with quality and affordability,” Drew said.

For more information on Box Five Theater and “Maul of the Dead,” contact Susan Marrash-Minnerly at minnerly@wvstateu.edu.

Monday Morning Art: The Possession of Penny Maple

Img_9231b

Last night at Dr. Sketchy’s, we artistic folk witnessed the Possession of Penny Maple. Above you see the end result. After the jump you will see a series of digital paintings and asaulted photographs that depict the descent of poor, innocent Penny into the clutches of the dee-vil himself, represented here by his agent, Elle Xombeah. It was a night of pre-Halloween fun. Special credit for the FX make up goes to Chris Woodall. Due to a technical issue, this week you can’t click the images to see them larger. You should just lean in and look at your monitor real close.
