A night of weirdness at The Empty Glass.

Johnny C and the Scurvy Dogs will be at Smiley’s at 9 PM tonight and Saturday, but they didn’t say if there’s a cover charge, so it’s a mystery. Still, it’s raucous ’80s covers and it’ll be a huge party atmosphere.

The Empty Glass promises “A Night of Weirdness with Project Biscotti ft John Frail & Professor Bubblemaker.” It kicks off at 9 PM and the cover is seven dollars. I gotta check out these guys one of these days.

Okay, here’s more car photos

October 11, 2013

This is one of those weeks when your PopCulteer is buried under stuff to do. I’m hard at work editing this year’s Radio Free Charleston Halloween specials, finishing up my contributions to the HallowEast 5 ArtMares exhibit, preparing to shoot a promo video for Kanawha Players, spending way too much time on Facebook arguing with Snopes.com deniers and working on an exciting new, semi-secret project.

And if you think that means that I haven’t come up with anything to write for this week’s PopCulteer…please enjoy this BONUS photo essay from last weekend’s Rod Run and Doo Wop Car Show!

Steve Ditko self portrait from the mid-1960s

Steve Ditko self portrait from the mid-1960s

Today we’re going to look at two recent high-quality collections of great work by the legendary Steve Ditko, but first I’ve got to let my readers know that this man, who created or co-created Spider-man, Dr. Strange, The Creeper, The Question, Hawk and Dove, Mr. A and other classic comic book characters is still producing quality work well into his eighties.

I’ve got a few of his self-published works, but I need to catch up with his most recent releases, which include essays by Ditko about his philosophies on creating and credit. Ditko is notoriously reluctant to do interviews, so this is the best way to get his take on things undiluted by the opinions and agendas of others. It’s also a way of making sure that the artist gets paid. Some collections of his work use his name to sell books, but don’t pay Ditko a dime.

The PopCult Toybox: Really Big Toys

Img_8817We’re bending the rules a little bit this week and bringing you a photo essay of the 2013 Rod Run and Doo Wop Car Show. These are some pretty cool toys, after all.

This photo essay consists of the pictures that didn’t make the cut of the music video I produced about the car show. There are still lots of great cars here (and even more that escaped my camera). I even salvaged a couple of shots, like the one at right, of the 1930 Packard that was swarmed by admirers.

Without further ado, here’s one last look at the car show. I promise I’ll shut up about it now.

Monday Morning Art: Hot Rod

Img_885505

We’re still a bit knocked-over by the 2013 Rod Run and Doo Wop Car Show, so this week’s art is a digital painting of one of the Hot Rods.  Youse can clicks on on it to see it all bigger and junk. Come back tomorrow, as The PopCult Toybox brings you a photo essay crafted entirely out of the pictures that didn’t make the cut for our PopCult Instant Video of the Car Show.

In case you don’t know what video I’m talking about, it’s this one…

PopCult Instant Video: 2013 Rod Run and Doo Wop Car Show

Taking place of the Sunday Evening Video and the RFC MINI SHOW this week is the above video of the 2013 Charleston Rod Run and Doo Wop Car Show. This was a fun video to shoot and edit and I hope my readers get a kick out of it.

Img_8554First, though, a few notes about how this video came to be. Oddly enough, the music came first. A few weeks ago, YouTube made some background music available to the folks who post there to use, royalty-free. Last week I downloaded a few tracks and found them to be pretty darned good. Two of them, in fact, were perfect for the kind of fast-moving quick-cut videos that I’ve been itching to do. “Half Pipe,” by Huma Huma and “Eviction” by The Silent Partner were the songs I wanted to use, but I didn’t know where.

Then it hit me, this was the week of the Charleston Rod Run and Doo Wop Car Show, an event I usually whine about because it closes my favorite road in Charleston. This year I would actually go to the show, but with a plan. In order to make it quick and easy to edit, and to cram as many cars into the video as possible, I would shoot still photos–hundreds of them–and cut them to the beat. Melanie shot video, just so we’d have some variety, and I’d slap it all together.

RFC Flashback: Episode 10

This is Radio Free Charleston’s tenth episode, originally posted to Gazz TV on November 29, 2006, and remastered october 4, 2013. This episode, “Captain Action Shirt,” features music from The Sleeping Dons and The Heydays, vintage animation remixed, and a short film starring Danny Boyd as an evil dwarf.

Host segments were shot on the grounds of the State Capitol Building, and if you look at the montage under the end credits, you can see the lovely fountain that they have since bulldozed.

Stuff To Do Friday and Saturday

You have two more chances to see the CYAC production, “Our Town,” Friday and Saturday at 8 PM at the WVSU Capitol Center Theater.

The big car show is going on at Kanawha Boulevard until 7 PM Saturday. I have mixed feelings about this. I love classic cars and will probably attend and post a huge photo essay, but I also hate to see Kanawha Boulevard shut down and used as a park. I’d feel better with this if it only happened once or twice a year. But still, cool cars, free music, lots of junk food–all downtown.

Free Music Friday

Rick Perdue will be at Taylor Books at 7:30 PM. Jim Snyder and The Castaways will be at Timothy’s (below the Quarrier Diner) at 8 PM and Dugan Carter and Friends will perform at Bruno’s on Leon Sullivan Way at 9 PM.
