RFC About A Year Ago

Episode 179, from last Februrary, featured West Virginia’s metal gods, Byzantine, in a great music video, plus a music video for Radiohead, with a song remixed by Frank Panucci and a video starring The Wayward Girls School of Burlesque, animated by RFC host Rudy Panucci. Also in this episode is our first visit to Third Eye Cabaret with The BrotherSisters and a cartoon by Andrew Hellblinki.

A Music-Packed Fifth Anniversary RFC

For our fifth birthday in 2011, Radio Free Charleston attempted the impossible. We recorded 12 performances in two days, combined them with animation and film, and had the show posted two days later. Clocking in at an hour, ten minutes, RFC 141 brings you music from Mother Nang, HarraH, 600 lbs of SIN, Linework, Holy Cow, Andy Park and The Kountry Katz, Holy Cow Jeff Ellis and Sasha Colette, Disturbing The Peace, Stacee Lawson and Remains Un Named. You’ll also get to see a music video for Pepper Fandango, directed by Eamon Hardiman. Dumpstar Productions brings us “Celebritol.” We have a trailer for Diana Curry’s film, “Creature Of The Night.” Frank Panucci provides us with the short film, “Magical Car Keys” and two pieces of animation, “No Running” and “Blue Dome.”

It was a pretty epic show.

TOY FAIR 2014: GI Joe Gets A Tepid Golden Anniversary Celebration From Hasbro

"Hi, remember the original GI Joe, the one that's celebrating his fiftieth birthday this year? I'm him!"

“Hi, remember the original GI Joe, the one that’s celebrating his fiftieth birthday this year? I’m him!”

2014 marks 50 years since the introduction of GI Joe, America’s Movable Fighting Man and the first action figure. There were fears that Hasbro would either miss this important anniversary entirely, or somehow find a way to screw the pooch.

It’s the latter.

Don’t get me wrong. Hasbro’s plans for GI Joe in 2014 are wonderful news for the 3 3/4″ “Real American Hero” incarnation of the classic toy, but for fans of the original GI Joe, the foot-tall everyman with accessories “sold separately,” Hasbro has bupkis. The Official GI Joe Collectors Club is offering a couple of items, one a freebie for joining the club, the other a high-priced convention exclusive, but if anybody is inspired by all the recent media coverage of the anniversary to run to a store to buy some kind of action figure like they grew up with in the 1960s and 1970s, they are SOL (that’s “Soldiers Out of Luck,” by the way).

It seems that Toys R Us is the exclusive retail partner for Hasbro to mark GI Joe’s fifty years. Sadly, this is in line with what I’d been told. Continue reading

Radio Free Charleston

Our own local webshow, born out of PopCult, is scheduled to be featured in Charleston Newspaper’s “Outlook on the Arts” supplement to the Sunday Gazette-Mail this weekend. We’re very excited by this and hope that it helps raise awareness of Radio Free Charleston in the area as we approach our 200th episode.

In a quick interview with Douglas Imbrogno, I talk about some of our highlights and give some hints to what the future holds for our humble little video journal of the local music, arts and film scenes. Many thanks to Doug for including us in this year’s guide to the arts scene in Charleston.

Because a lot of first-time viewers may be coming to visit PopCult Sunday, we will be posting some of our best episodes all day long. That means that we will skip the RFC Flashback on Saturday. Its place will be filled by a load of Toy News in advance of the American International Toy Fair, which starts Sunday in New York.

We also plan to drop a new RFC MINI SHOW on Monday. It’s busy times here at Stately Radio Free Charleston Manor. Be sure to run out and buy a copy or three of the Sunday Gazette-Mail so you can see us in the Outlook supplement.

Valentine’s Art

1782062_10203046191220963_2080223250_nArt Emporium will present Ian Bode’s “A Couple’s Affair Valentine’s Mini Show” today, with Ian on hand from 11:00 AM to 1 PM, and again from 3 PM to 6 PM. This was rescheduled from yesterday, when nasty winter weather cancelled everything from art shows to RFC tapings.

Featured in the show are new paintings inspired by Valentine’s Day, love, hearts, love of hearts, those who have loved with their hearts and the town of Chuckburgh. Ian will also be making 4″ x 4″ and 6″ x 6″ The Passenger style couples caricatures on the spot. Ian will be doing Valentine caricatures from 11 AM to 1 PM and 3PM to 6PM today at Art Emporium on Quarrier Street.

Comics In Your Future

The PopCult Bookshelf

This week in our Bookshelf looks ahead to two comic books that haven’t been published yet.

1008862_586582141421487_1877881511_oFirst up we have “The Charlton Arrow,” a new comic that looks to recreate the feel of the late and lamented underacheiving comic book publisher, Charlton. a self-contained entity, which handled its editorial, printing and distribution in-house with a family-owned business atmosphere (rumored to be connected to another type of “family”) was the plucky little comic that flew under the radar, with a few spectacular high points before they ended with a whimper in the mid-1980s.
