RFC Flashback: Episode 150

Since this week the city of Charleston declared the Quarrier Building to be vacant, five years after they evicted LiveMix Studio and many artists, I decided to pay tribute, one more time, to the original home of Radio Free Charleston. For our 150th episode, RFC looked back at LiveMix Studio, our early production partner and home to many increidble moments.  This episode includes classic LiveMix  performances by Raymond Wallace, The Nanker Phelge, The Ghosts of Now, Whistlepunk 2.0, Melanie Larch and The Feast of Stephen.

After the credits we unveiled a never-before-seen performance by Sasha Colette, backed by John Lily and Jonathan Wood.

In a departure from our normal format, this episode of RFC included interviews with RFC Big Shot, Brian Young, RFC Big Shot, Melanie Larch, and performers Lee Harrah, Dave Roberts and Raymond Wallace. We also hear from Tommy Medvick and Dan Jordan in archival interviews.  You can read the original production notes, from March 2012, here.

The Creeps

I wrote about The Creeps a few months ago, and there’s some great news. This tribute to the Warren horror comics of days gone by has increased its frequency to four times a year, from two, and a new issue is due out by the end of June. In fact, if you order it before June 15, you can get a poster of the Frank Frazetta cover, seen at the head of this post, for free. Just follow this link. You can also subscribe. It’s really cool to see a nice retro horror comic magazine thrive.

Charlton Neo

Next Thursday I will bring you a full update on the happenings with the Charlton Neo movement, but until then, why don’t you check out this preview of a new comic strip that they’re adding to the Pix-C weekly webcomics. If you support Charlton Neo through Patreon, for as little as a dollar a week, you get access to a dozen great comic strips by some of the most dedicated creators in comics.

WonderFest USA, Part Two

The PopCult Toybox

Nicotero

Nicotero

First, an explanation is in order. Your PopCulteer has been dealing with allergy-induced sinus headaches for the last few days. Because of this, work on the WonderFest USA photos and videos went much slower than it normally would have.

If you read PopCult last Sunday, you know that I made a trip to Louisville, Kentucky last weekend, really a last-minute decision, to attend WonderFest USA, the annual Fantasy, SF and Horror Model-building convention. It was a great trip. My wife got to meet Greg Nicotero, the producer and FX coordinator for The Walking Dead, and I got meet some cool folks, too. I mentioned all this in my initial post a few days ago.

WF-logo-metallic_2Rather than drag things out any longer, I have combined what were supposed to be several posts over the last few days into one massive beast of a post.

Above you see a fifteen-minute-plus video, shot by Melanie Larch and with music by The Possum Kingdom Ramblers, that buzzes around the huge WonderFest model-building contest room. Below, you will find over one-hundred photos from WonderFest, most of them also from the model-building contest, and most are sans captions. None of these photos are repeated from Sunday’s photo essay. Some are different views of the same models, but these are all new. Go check out that post to see the rest. This is the biggest photo essay I’ve ever posted here in PopCult, so be prepared for it to take a little while to load after you hit the “Read the rest of this entry” link.

I don’t have a lot of information about who built which kit, so just enjoy the eye-candy and admire the vast amounts of talent and hard work on display. Saturday there will be a bonus PopCult Toybox showing off a very special surprise that we found hidden at WonderFest USA, with photos and video. The PopCult Bookshelf will return next week.

Random Musical Wonderfulness on Radio Free Charleston’s Streaming show on New Appalachian Radio

NAR log 104RFCv3 #29

Stream of consciousness rules on a show with no theme this week as Radio Free Charlston streams on New Appalachian Radio. As I assembled this program, I had no idea what music was coming up next.

Why did I skip the usually-necessary preparation step this week?

I ain’t gonna lie to my listners. I was tired after the sudden surprise trip to WonderFest USA this weekend. You’ll see more photos and some video from Louisville later today.

Each Week you can listen to Radio Free Charleston’s streaming radio incarnation at 10 AM and 10 PM on Tuesdays (and again at midnightThursday) at New Appalachian Radio, part of Voices of Appalachia. If you miss it, check our the archives for previously-aired shows. You can also listen to Radio Free Charleston Saturday at Midnight. Saturday, RFC airs for six hours, starting at midnight.

Even with the near-total lack of preparation, I think we delivered a pretty darned cool episode! We do have a new batch of head-scracthing, statio IDs with movie quotes, so at least I put a little effort into it.

Monday Morning Art: Menacing Lavender

Img_39291

This week’s art is a digital oil painting based on a photograph of Lavender Menace from last week’s Dr. Sketchy’s session. With Lavender’s expression in this shot, I decided to use a more foreboding color palette to make for a tougher-looking portrait.  I hope it worked. Click to enlarge.

The June Dr. Sketchy’s happens June 28 at WVSU EDC/DigiSo.
