This week we go with a patriotic color scheme on a geometric abstract in honor of the founding of our country. It sort of makes you think of mom, baseball and apple pie…or maybe Evel Knievel or something. Click to enlarge, and be safe on the fourth, unless you’re one of those morons who’s been setting off fireworks all hours of the day and night for the last week. If you’re one of them, I hope you blow your hand off and catch your house on fire.

Tomorrow is Independence Day, and it’s also the fortieth anniversary of the 200th anniversary of the birth of this country. So tonight we’re going to re-catch “Bicenntennial Fever” with a series of videos showing just how excited this country could manage to be only two years removed from the disgrace of Watergate and President Nixon’s resignation. Above you see a pretty drugged-up looking cartoon produced using taxpayer money. Below you’ll see various tributes to our forefathers, and even a look back at the bicenntennial from 1977.

So you can either watch these clips and feel really patriotic, or just make fun of the clothes and hairstyles. It’s a free country.

This weekend marks the tenth anniversary of the video version of Radio Free Charleston.  Officially, July 4, 2006, was our debut date.  Unofficially, the show was online a few days before that, but who wants to be a stickler for details?

You may have noticed that the Radio Free Charleston video program has been on a bit of a hiatus since January.  This has been primarily due to my recent adventures in the worlds of medicine and my diagnosis of myasthenia gravis.

However, Radio Free Charleston will continue as a video program and a special tenth anniversary show will combine at least one new musical performance with a brief retrospective of our ten year history of chronicling the Charleston music and arts scene.  The original plan was to have that show ready for the 4th of July, our official anniversary date.  Since we intended to shoot some of our host segments last weekend at Haddad Riverfront Park and last weekend Haddad Riverfront Park was under about ten feet of water, we decided to wait until later in the month to produce this show.

After our 10th anniversary show, the Radio Free Charleston video show will continue, but probably no more than once a month, with the occasional RFC MINI SHOW sprinkled in as time will allow.

You will still be able to get your weekly dose of Radio Free Charleston every Tuesday at 10 AM and 10 PM on The AIR.  A lot of my energies have been focused on The AIR, the internet radio station of which I am now co-owner, and I have to say, it is much less labor intensive than producing the RFC video show.  In the time it takes me to shoot, edit, record, assemble, and render a twenty minute video program, I can produce about ten hours of radio programming.

But the visuals are really important and so we will not abandon RFC as a video entity.  To mark our tenth anniversary, today we bring you the very first episode of Radio Free Charleston and for the foreseeable future, the RFC Flashback will present the original episodes of Radio Free Charleston in order each week, right here in PopCult.

Today is the big day for The AIR.  Our humble little internet radio station relaunches with more than 12 hours of brand new programming.  Today is a special “teaser” day where we’re bringing you sneak peeks at a bunch of our new shows which will debut in their regular time slots beginning next week.  You can tune in and listen all day today at The AIR website or in this handy little embedded radio player…

The new programming begins bright and early at 8 AM with a few of the shows repeated throughout the day so you have multiple chances to get in on the fun.  We will also be broadcasting live from The Empty Glass at 9:00 PM to bring you special soundcheck performances from the HARRAH/Trielement dual CD release party.

The plan for the new schedule for The AIR is to present work friendly programming from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM so that you can listen to us in the office without getting in trouble.  After 7:00 PM, The AIR will exploit its internet radio status, free from government regulation and trust us, the potty mouths will run wild. Today you’ll just get a taste of the fine programming that will begin on The AIR in earnest next Tuesday.

I suppose you want to know what you’ll be hearing all day today, so here’s a quick rundown.

The RFC Interview
(8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, and 8:00 PM)

After years of nagging from many people, your PopCulteer has finally relented and agreed to conduct interviews.  The first Radio Free Charleston Interview Special features a one hour chat with my good friend, Mark Wolfe.  Mark has made quite a name for himself and is well respected as an artist, photographer, podcast host and graphic designer.  Last year, he surprised quite a few people by releasing an album of original compositions wherein he played guitar.  In the RFC Interview, we talked to Mark about his late blooming musical career and his recent trip to the UK to perform on a special project with several veteran recording artists. The RFC Interview Specials will run on an erratic and irregular basis on The AIR. The Best of The Real with Mark Wolfe can be heard every Wednesday at 2 PM, with replays throughout the following week.
