Today is the big day for The AIR.  Our humble little internet radio station relaunches with more than 12 hours of brand new programming.  Today is a special “teaser” day where we’re bringing you sneak peeks at a bunch of our new shows which will debut in their regular time slots beginning next week.  You can tune in and listen all day today at The AIR website or in this handy little embedded radio player…

The new programming begins bright and early at 8 AM with a few of the shows repeated throughout the day so you have multiple chances to get in on the fun.  We will also be broadcasting live from The Empty Glass at 9:00 PM to bring you special soundcheck performances from the HARRAH/Trielement dual CD release party.

The plan for the new schedule for The AIR is to present work friendly programming from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM so that you can listen to us in the office without getting in trouble.  After 7:00 PM, The AIR will exploit its internet radio status, free from government regulation and trust us, the potty mouths will run wild. Today you’ll just get a taste of the fine programming that will begin on The AIR in earnest next Tuesday.

I suppose you want to know what you’ll be hearing all day today, so here’s a quick rundown.

New RFC Logo 02The RFC Interview
(8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, and 8:00 PM)

After years of nagging from many people, your PopCulteer has finally relented and agreed to conduct interviews.  The first Radio Free Charleston Interview Special features a one hour chat with my good friend, Mark Wolfe.  Mark has made quite a name for himself and is well respected as an artist, photographer, podcast host and graphic designer.  Last year, he surprised quite a few people by releasing an album of original compositions wherein he played guitar.  In the RFC Interview, we talked to Mark about his late blooming musical career and his recent trip to the UK to perform on a special project with several veteran recording artists. The RFC Interview Specials will run on an erratic and irregular basis on The AIR. The Best of The Real with Mark Wolfe can be heard every Wednesday at 2 PM, with replays throughout the following week.

(9:00 AM and 7:00 PM)

In a brand new episode, Lee Hale, plus Jay and Tiff, look back at what was a very eventful week indeed with all the trademark Appalachian humor they can muster. Laugh Appalachia will debut Fridays at 9 AM and 9 PM, with replays throughout the following week.

(9:30 AM and 7:30 PM)

In this brand new episode of The AIR’s weekly pop culture random gabfest, Lee Harrah and Rudy Panucci talk about The AIR and all the new programming that we’ll be adding in the coming weeks.  As is usual with Word Association with Lee and Rudy, this brisk half hour quickly goes off the rails and degenerates into side topics like using denture tablets to clean the toilet and who did what on M*A*S*H. Starting next week, Word Association with Lee and Rudy will debut Friday nights at 9:30 PM.

folderPrognosis
(11:00 AM)

Our first program from our overseas production partner, the Haversham Recording Institute, Prognosis is two hours of progressive rock, presented by acclaimed recording engineer and musicologist, Herman Linte.  In this inaugural episode, Herman treats us to “Prog’s greatest hits,” with classic tracks from YES, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, and more.  Prognosis will air every Monday at 3:00 PM, with repeats throughout the next week.

From The Wings 00011Curtain Call
(1:00 PM and 6:00 PM)

Mel Larch takes time out from hosting On The Road With Mel to present a weekly hour of the best of musical theatre.  Running the gamut from the early days of Broadway to today, Curtain Call will bring you the entire history of the world of musical theatre in weekly one hour doses.  A new episode of Curtain Call will debut every Wednesday at 3:00 PM, with replays throughout the following week.

BEC raw 010Sydney’s Big Electric Cat
(2:00 PM and Midnight)

Legendary London DJ Sydney Fileen presents our second program from the Haversham Recording Institute, Sydney’s Big Electric Cat.  This two hour weekly megadose of pure New Wave music will whisk you back to the days of neon, skinny ties, big hair, Swatch watches, and Farfisa organs.  Sydney’s Big Electric Cat will deliver a fresh episode every Friday at 3:00 PM, with repeats throughout the following week.

(4:00 PM)

The AIR is happy to be presenting Radio Coolsville, a program hosted by DJ Betty Rock which was originally broadcast Thursdays on WMUL in Huntington.  This eclectic mix of really cool stuff will find its way to The AIR on Tuesdays at 3:00 PM, with replays throughout the following week. Radio Coolsville is hosted by the charming and enigmatic DJ Betty Rock.

257368_208947639143755_3362433_oLive From The Empty Glass
(9:00 PM)

In a potentially disastrous move, your PopCulteer will be broadcasting live from The Empty Glass from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM.  We will be flying without a net or a script.  The plan is to feature at least two live songs from the soundcheck by HARRAH and Trielement for the evening’s show which begins at 10:00 PM.  Both HARRAH and Trielement are marking the release of brand new CD’s tonight at The Empty Glass and we will bring you tracks from each of those albums.  This will be my first live remote in over twenty five years and we literally have no plan for what will go on.  I will be talking.  Lee Harrah will be talking.  Both of us will probably be talking at the same time.  There will be music, goofiness, lots of plugging of The AIR’s programming, and potentially drunken hi-jinks.  You won’t want to miss what will either be an amazing feat of professional broadcasting or a train wreck of biblical proportions.

13292927_10208212730653587_516513852_nHarrah’s Hard & Heavy
(10:00 PM)

Pulling triple duty today, Mr. Lee Harrah not only co-hosts Word Association With Lee and Rudy and performs live with his band HARRAH, but he also debuts his brand new show, Harrah’s Hard & Heavy.  It’s hard rock and heavy metal filtered through the unique tastes of Lee Harrah.  Harrah’s Hard & Heavy will debut Monday nights at 11:00 PM, with repeats throughout the following week on The AIR.

TN-Vault-Door1The Comedy Vault
(11:00 PM)

Quite possibly the most dangerous radio program ever assembled, The Comedy Vault presents the best of the entire history of comedy compressed and condensed into a weekly uncensored one hour capsule of concentrated kinectic comedy energy.  This sixty minute montage jumbles together everything from Mort Sahl to Marc Maron to The Firesign Theatre to Weird Al Yankovich to Red Foxx to Jim Norton to Monty Python to Lenny Bruce and on and on and on.  Expect the entire world of recorded comedy to come crashing down around your shoulders.  You can get locked in The Comedy Vault every Wednesday night at 11:00 PM, with replays throughout the following week.

That is the schedule for our big preview day.  You will hear this programming repeated at different times of the day Saturday, Sunday, and Monday and then our new regular schedule begins bright and early Tuesday morning when everybody is recovering from greasy cookout food and hungover from the cheap fireworks.  At The AIR, we will be bringing you an audible internet revolution.
