This week our art is an acrylic painting of my beautiful wife, Mel Larch.
It’s inspired in part by a photo I was able to sneakingly snap while we were waiting to meet Ellen Greene in Baltimore at a 40th anniversary screening of Little Shop of Horrors a week ago last Saturday.
You can see the actual photo in this post.
Now you may notice that, in that photo, Mel is not smiling, and her head is not in the same position. I basically just wanted to paint her with that lighting, so I used it for color reference. I mean, I know what my wife looks like. While we were waiting to be ushered into the room where Ellen Greene was, I was just staring at her face the whole time. She was just radiant while at the same time being nervously cute as hell.
Seriously, she’d be my muse and would be in a lot more of my paintings if not for the fact that she desperately despises being photographed and while I would love to make pretty pictures of her for the rest of my life…it’s not worth the distress that it would cause her.
In fact, I had to sneak and paint this, stashing it out of sight every time she walked by the office. She would’ve made me put something else in this spot.
However, I’m willing to risk her ire for the sake of a good painting once in a while. This was done on a smallish canvas with acrylics…with love.
