Monday Morning Art: žMogus Menulis

Today’s Monday Morning Art was going to be my third piece submitted to the ArtMares Exhibit, opening October 27 at Kanawha Player’s Theater, 309 Beauregard Street. It’s part of  the way-cool HallowEast 2 festivities, and I was honored to be asked to contribute for the second year in a row.

However, when I took my pieces to be printed, the file for this one had a glitch in it, so it didn’t make the cut. I was able to fix the glitch, so now you get to see “žMogus Menulis” as an example of Monday Morning Art. You’ll have to go to the exhibit to see my other two pieces.  As always, click the image to see a bigger version.

Sunday Evening Video: Halloween Horror Is Coming

Halloween is rapidly approaching. Above you see the 30-second spot for HallowEast 2 and The Zombie Walk.  I was lucky enough to be invited to appear in this spot, alongside the zombies, Naomi Bays, Vasilia Scouras and Steven Adams.  It was a load of fun, and  I hope everyone comes out to the HallowEast festivities this year.

Below you see the trailer for the Radio Free Charleston Halloween Special, which this year is going to be a movie called “Jazz From Hell.” We’re still shooting this, but I plan to have it online before Halloween. For more information on the progress we’re making (or not) on this film, visit the RFC fan page on Facebook where we have dozens of preview photos up.

After the jump, you’ll find a longer version of the HallowEast spot.  These were made by K.D. Lett and Mark Wolfe Design for the East End Main Street folks.  You’ll also find the flyer for the Zombie Walk on October 29, people are dying to participate in this!

Halloween Comics

It’s the season for cool scary comics, and this week we’re taking a look at a trio of terror-filled comics.  Leading the way is a collection I’ve been wanting to see for over 30 years, so let’s dig in and check out some Halloween holiday appropriate comic books!

Dick Briefer’s Frankenstein
Edited and designed by Craig Yoe
Yoe Books/IDW Publishing
ISBN-13: 978-1600107221

This is a deluxe comic book collection that I’ve been waiting for for more than thirty years.

I first read about Dick Briefer’s Frankenstein comics of the 1940s way back in “The Comic Book Book,” a collection of essays on the Golden Age of comics published back in 1978. Until now, there hasn’t been a widely-available collection of these classic comics. There have been a few stray historical articles, but this is what I’ve been waiting for.

RFC 112: Great New Bands And Movie Trailers!

RFC 112 "Toxic Soup Shirt" from Rudy Panucci on Vimeo.

Radio Free Charelston 112, “Toxic Soup Shirt” is online now, and you should see it right above this text!  We have three bands making their RFC debut–Crossroads, Doctor Curmudgeon and Happy Minor.  We also have a movie trailer for the documentary, “Toxic Soup,” and one for “Jazz From Hell,” about which you will read later.

“Toxic Soup” also provided the shirt I wear in this episode.  Host segments were shot in the Davis Fine Arts building at West Virginia State University, and it was a cool setting, and my old stomping grounds.  People were acting like something unusual was going on, but I didn’t notice anything. Big thanks to Stefani Andrews for making her debut as an RFC crew member. Continue reading

Tremendous And Important Randomosity!

The PopCulteer
October 8, 2010

We’ve got a mixed-up stew of items in The PopCulteer this week, so let’s jump right in!

Comic Book Price War!

Early Thursday, DC Comics fired the first salvo in a price war between the the two major comic book companies.  Faced with plummeting sales, due to what had become a nearly standard four-dollar cover price, DC announced that, at the beginning of next year, most of their books will drop to $2.99 and feature 20 pages of story.  Sadly, this means that the books that already sold for that price, will drop from 22 pages to 20 pages of story content, and that the co-features from the $3.99 books will have to find new homes.

Less than an hour later, Marvel announced that. starting in January, all of their new titles will debut at $2.99.

Monday Morning Art: Digital Swirl

Today’s Art to kick off your week is a digital swirl.  I digitally-assaulted a photograph so much that it’d be pointless to mention what it was.  This digital design has more effects in it than a James Cameron movie. The end result—well, it looks sorta nice.  So there you go.  Click it to see it bigger, which I really recommend this week, since reducing it to blog size obliterated a lot of the subtlety of the pattern in the center.

Sunday Evening Videos: More From Happy Minor

Happy Minor "Foolish Games" from Rudy Panucci on Vimeo.

In lasr Friday’s PopCulteer, we brought you a video from the band, Happy Minor.  This group, consisting of Steve Clever Siders,  Mike Selbe, Whitney Hess, Joey Lafferty and Shane Durham, have an amazing sound.  They blend elements of blue-eyed soul, reggae, rock, jazz and originality into something new and wonderful.

You can see Happy Minor on October 8 at The Blue Parrot with RFC faves, InFormation (with whom they share a drummer) at 10 PM.  I’ll have full details in this week’s PopCulteer. They’re also slated for an early November show at The Boulevard Tavern.  And you can be sure that you’ll see them with mulitple cameras on a future episode of Radio Free Charleston.

Above, you see Happy Minor performing their original tune, “Foolish Games.” Below you can dig into a meaty medley of cover tunes that shows off the band’s versatility.
