As observant readers of this blog may know, your PopCulteer is on the road at the moment, as a gueat of JoeLanta and The Great Atlanta Toy Convention. I am trying to bring you some updates from the road, using a Frankensteined laptop and our lovely hotel’s WiFi connection.

Thursday was spent on an incredible tour that took us to three cool places.Today I will attempt to bring you three short photo essays of our journey, led by the steady hand of Fred, the Jedimaster bus driver. We also shot some video, but you’ll have to wait until next week for it.

Finally, we stopped at the house of master dioramist, Brian Tatum. Brian keeps his toy collection in a 5,000 square feet warehouse that adjoins his house. This small photo essay just scratches the surface of what Brian has. Next week I will post more photos and probably a video of his amazing stash of toys. Because of this, I presenting this photo essay without many captions. Brian’s collection was jaw-dropping in its size and scope.

The second stop on Thursday’s magical mystery tour was at the house of Tim Merritt, who has a pretty amazing collection of Mint In Box GI Joe items. He doesn’t keep his stuff in a “Joe Room.” He keeps it in a “Joe House,” behind his very nice regular house. Many thanks to Tim and Tammy Merritt for being such gracious hosts.

Our first stop was in Senoia, Georgia, a nice small town that has been used as a location for many movies and TV Shows. Most notably, it has been seen standing in as “Woodbury,” the barricaded Walker-free fort/city ruled by The Governor, in The Walking Dead.

The Gift Shop. They let us go downstairs to see the museum in progress. It open officially March 29, after they get Daryl’s motorcycle in.

Hey, if you’ve been paying atention lately, you know that your PopCulteer is off on a wonderful trip down South to Atlanta, the land of The Walking Dead, GI Joe conventions and really cool toy shows. You may have also noticed that the posts over the last few days have been a little less wordy and a little more picture-y. That’s because PopCult is being prepared in advance. We’re cooking a whole mess of these posts up so that the mighty Gazzblog interface merely has to take them out of the freezer, warm them up and plop them on the table in front of you.

There is a good chance that this blog will also be updated from the road, since we’ll be shooting tons of pictures and video while we’re doing all sorts of cool things. We just prepared these posts in advance in case we start having too much fun to do that. If everything goes as planned, you might want to check back for a mini-photo essay later today featuring images from our tour of Woodbury, the town the Governor ran in The Walking Dead.

The PopCult Bookshelf

Word comes from our friends at The Empty Glass that the legendary bar and music venue (and frequent location for Radio Free Charleston) will be featured in a new book, “Rock Atlas USA: The Musical Landscape of America.”  They even turn up in a picture on the Table of Contents!

I haven’t mentioned this until now but last Saturday  my uncle, and godfather, Don Panucci died unexpectedly.  To say it was a shock would be an understatement.  I found out while editing the music videos for the latest episode of Radio Free Charleston and was so numb I simply continued editing video and mixing audio for the rest of the day. I just didn’t know how to react.

Donald was my father’s youngest brother and last surviving sibling.  Many of you may know him from the years he spent running Warden’s Kitchen and Appliance Gallery.  You may remember I lost another uncle last year, Gene Warden.  Gene lent his name to the business but had virtually nothing to do with its success.  It was Don, along with my aunt, Stella Jo Warden and my father, Frank Panucci, who made “Warden’s” synonymous with quality custom kitchen design.

It feels really strange to be going on a very pleasant vacation at this time, but Don would not have wanted me to miss this trip. I did have to take some time out to post this from Anderson, South Carolina.

I remained silent about Don’s passing out of respect for his family’s privacy.  The reason I’m mentioning this in the blog now is that my uncle Don’s obituary is scheduled to run today and I know people will have questions.  Needless to say, Don touched many lives and will be sorely missed by his family and many friends.  I know I will miss him very much.

Radio Free Charleston 196, “Test Subject MCHM” is a jam-packed show with three musical acts making their RFC debut, and two acts returning after more than five years away. We also have animation from Jake Fertig, and “PrelinGERD” by Frank Panucci.

Our host segments were shot in an appropriate place for me to wear this week’s title shirt, “Test Subject MCHM,” which is a fundraiser reward from the upcoming documentary, “The Sweet Taste of Freedom,” which is, of course, about the ramifications of January’s chemical spill into the Elk River.
