Sunday Evening Videos: RFC Halloween To Date

Image11-e1445700975149Concluding our look at Radio Free Charleston’s ghosts of Halloweens past, we go back to the last four years. Two of those years feature shows shot at ShockaCon, while 2014 saw us return to a more elaborate format with our Ouija show, featuring guests Mark Wolfe, Penny Maple and Kitty Killton. Last year I procrastinated and wound up reviving “Count Rudolf” at the last minute. Of course, this year we’re not going to have a Halloween special because Radio Free Charleston is on a temporary video hiatus.

toon01Musical guests on these shows include The Renfields with Ari Lehman, The Nanker Phelge, HARRAH, Hurl Brickbat, The Jasons, The Big Bad and more.

Picking up the thread from four years ago, here are the remainder of the RFC Halloween treats.

It’s Sick Day on RFC on The AIR

AIR color 0036Well, your PopCulteer is not exactly sick, but he is out of town for a medical evaluation related to Myasthenia Gravis. Because of this, we’re going to have some reruns this week on The AIR.

As is always the case, you can tune in at The AIR website or on this special little embedded radio player widget…

Radio Free Charleston, Radio Coolsville and Six Degrees of Separation all all repeats today, but they’re all very, very good shows and you will beat yourself up about it all week if you miss them. On top of that, we’ve snuck in special surprises and astonishing feats all day long. You’ll just have to tune in to hear what they are.

Next week we’ll have a lot of new shows on the schedule on The AIR, so you might as well get in the habit of listening now.

Curtain Call and The Swing Shift Take Over The AIR

columbus day marathonThe AIR, our amazing yet obscure internet radio station, stages a special event on Monday. Since it’s no longer kosher to claim Columbus day as a sort of Italian Pride Day, we’ll just say, enjoy your day off and tune in for show tunes and swing music all day long.

We’re having a marathon that will alternate our Wednesday-afternoon music shows, Curtain Call and The Swing Shift, all day long, from 7 AM to Midnight.  You can listen at The AIR website or on this marvelous and confounding little internet embedded doo-hickey thing…

At 3 PM each weekday The AIR brings you a specialty music block to help you finish your day of wage-earning. On Wednesdays we’ve had two programs filling that bill. That will change next week, when Curtain Call, our musical theater show, expands to two hours, with the first hour being brand-new, and the second hour presenting an encore of a previous episode.

Fans of The Swing Shift need not despair, as our celebration of 100 years of Swing moves to Tuesday, and follows the same format. Radio Coolsville, which was heard at 3 PM on Tuesday, will move to 1 PM, and return with new episodes early next year.

Today you can hear Curtain Call and The Swing Shift airing in alternate hours, all day long.

On Curtain Call. Mel Larch brings you an hour of the best of musical theater. Over the course of the day you’ll hear showstoppers from “The Book of Mormon,” “Hamilton,” “Fun Home,” “Hedwig and The Angry Inch,” The Rocky Horror Show,” “Gypsy,” and more. Mel will bring you everything from the classics by Rogers and Hammerstein to brand-new shows and everything in between. Check it out during the even-numbered hours today.

Your Popculteer pops up as the host of The Swing Shift. You may recall earlier this year that I brought you two episodes of Radio Free Charleston International dedicated to Swing Music. Those were so well-received, and I had so much fun doing them, that I decided to go ahead with a weekly one-hour show that mixes together the best swing music from the last century into a concise, swinging, blast of jumpin’ music.

Today on the odd-numbered hours you’ll hear classic swing music from Benny Goodman, Harry James and Glenn Miller amid swing revivalists Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, Brian Setzer Orchestra, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and more. The Swing Shift will move to Tuesday afternoons at 3 PM next week.

Monday Morning Art: Pondo Victorious

Pondo

We kick off this week with a digital painting of a victorious Mad Man Pondo, from last weekend’s very successful IWA East Coast event, “Herdamania,” where thousands of dollars were raised to help rebuild the athletic program at the flood-afflicted Elkview Middle School. Pondo’s victory over T.J. Perkins was just one highlight of an evening that saw the return of such IWA East Coast stalwarts as Crowza, Mickie Knuckles, El Drunko and the founding father himself, Mad Man Pondo. We’ll keep you posted on more IWA East Coast happenings in the coming weeks here in PopCult.

Sunday Evening Videos: RFC Halloween

Tonight it’s time to repeat an annual tradition and to do so we’re going to get into the spirit of the season and re-present our classic Halloween shows. If this all seems familiar, it’s probably because we find some way to do this every year.

This week we’ll look at the Halloween specials from our first seven years. You will see classic RFC performances by Clownhole, Whistlepunk, half the Pistol Whippers, Lil’ Guy from South Park Enteprises, Big Money, Go Van Gogh, Under The Radar, and more, plus all sorts of scary animation and guest appearances. Next week we’ll probably bring you even more RFC Halloween Madness, including what many people consider our finest show.

2006

Our first two-parter, now combined into one show. See Rudy Panucci get killed and resurrected as a ghost.

Ten Years of RFC Flashback: Episode 17

Episode 17 of Radio Free Charleston saw your host, Rudy Panucci, sporting a “Kung Fu Grip” Shirt, and was loaded with all sorts of cool stuff. We had RFC Diva, Melanie Larch in an IWA East Coast wrestling ring, cutting a promo (she will not be in the ring tonight). Music from John Radcliff and Under The Radar, recorded at LiveMix Studio, and we had an episode of Pentagram Flowerbox and our end credit repurposed a Stan Freberg commercial. Go back to March, 2007, for “Kung Fu Grip Shirt.”  You can find the original production notes here.
