The 2016 PopCult Gift Guide: The Battle of Charleston

The Battle of Charleston and the 1862 Kanawha Valley Campaign
2016-07-28_20-05-57-frontonly-624-copyby Terry Lowry
35th Star Publishing
ISBN-13: 9780966453485
$35.95

Today’s local pick is a great new Civil War book by Terry Lowry.  The Battle of Charleston and the 1862 Kanawha Valley Campaign features over 332 photographs and images, many never before published, as well as 11 maps.

Terry Lowry is a graduate of South Charleston High School and graduated in 1974 with a B. A. in History from West Virginia State College (now University) and studied Civil War History at Marshall University Graduate School. A professional musician since 1965, he was contributing music editor for The Charleston Gazette 1970-75 and music editor 1977-78. He published his first book, The Battle of Scary Creek: Military Operations in the Kanawha Valley, April-July 1861, in July of 1982, and also published September Blood: The Battle of Carnifex Ferry (1985); two volumes in the Virginia Regimental Series, 22nd Virginia Infantry (1988) and 26th (Edgar s) Battalion Virginia Infantry (1991); and Last Sleep: The Battle of Droop Mountain November 6, 1863 (1996). He co-authored with Stan Cohen Images of the Civil War in West Virginia (2000). Additionally his Civil War articles have been published in North South Trader, Wonderful West Virginia, and Confederate Veteran magazines, as well as the West Virginia Hillbilly. He has also been a contributor to the Time-Life series of books on the Civil War and remains an avid collector of Civil War memorabilia. He was historian/curator of the Craik-Patton House, Charleston, West Virginia, for two years and since 2001 has been a historian at the West Virginia State Archives, Charleston, West Virginia. In 2009 he published Bastard Battalion: A History of the 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion in World War II, which critics have called one of the best World War II unit histories ever written. The surviving members of the 83rd appointed him Official Historian of the unit. When it comes to our history, Terry knows his stuff, and this new book has a particular interest for Kanawha Valley residents.

giftguide-graphic-008The Battle of Charleston (West Virginia), fought September 13, 1862, between the Confederate forces of Gen. William Wing Loring and the Federal command of Col. Joseph Andrew Jackson Lightburn, pales in comparison to many of the more well-known and documented engagements of the American Civil War. Yet the battle and the activities comprising the 1862 Kanawha Valley Campaign, particularly Lightburn’s subsequent retreat, beginning at Fayetteville and ending at Point Pleasant, were of much more strategic importance than readily meets the eye and held special meaning for many of its participants.

One such individual was Sgt. Joseph Pearson, Company F, 44th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, who wrote about the battle of Charleston in his journal, “We had several killed and wounded in this affair, but it was only a skirmish to what we afterwards learned of war. Yet I was more impressed with the dread[ful] feeling of that little action than all the others I was in to the finish.”

The 1862 Kanawha Valley Campaign has long been neglected by scholars, probably due to the great national attention placed on the Battle of Antietam and the Maryland Campaign, which took place during this same time period. Owing to the meticulous work of author/historian Terry Lowry, it has finally been given its due.

The Battle of Charleston and the 1862 Kanawha Valley Campaign is the perfect gift for the history buff on your shopping list. This book can be ordered directly from the publisher, and can be found at Taylor Books and soon in several other local bookstores.

The 2016 PopCult Gift Guide: SALT by Daniel

salt-coverOur local entry today is SALT, the latest graphic novel by acclaimed filmmaker and award-winning graphic novelist Daniel Boyd. Caliber Comics released the highly anticipated and riveting eco-horror graphic novel SALT, just last week and you can find it at Lost Legion Cards and Comics in South Charleston, or go to the book signing Thursday, from 6 PM to 7PM at Taylor Books so you can get a personalized, autographed copy for the graphic novel connoisseur on you holiday list. For the lazy among you, the book will soon be available from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, but if you order it online it won’t be signed by the author, now will it?

SALT is the stand-alone follow up to Boyd’s award-nominated graphic novel CARBON. It’s a tale of greed and exploitation, of an apocalyptic event that brings the Earth to the brink of an unimaginable world-wide environmental disaster, of a power-hungry government in chaos, and of the persistence of hope.

giftguide-graphic-008In a small coal mining community in Southern West Virginia, a coal baron sets off a chain reaction that brings the world to the brink of destruction. What is unleashed are beastly carbon monsters bent on the destruction of everything and everyone. A small band of coal miners set out to make things right with an unlikely natural resource, red salt. They battle monsters, a crazed militia, and a government spinning out of control. We watch the story unfold through the eyes of their Reverend companion and see how hope survives, even throughout an apocalyptic event the likes of which the world has never seen.

Teamed with artist, Preorag Ivanovic, Boyd has delivered another speculative fiction thrill-ride. SALT explores questions of faith, greed, corruption, power, and perseverance. Look for a more detailed review in the coming weeks, but SPOILER ALERT: It’s a great book!

The 2016 PopCult Gift Guide: Amazing Toys of Marvin Glass

9780764351259The Amazing Toys of Marvin Glass
by Joyce Grant
Schiffer Publishing Ltd.
ISBN-13: 978-0764351259
$24.99

I raved about this book in this blog a few weeks ago because The Amazing Toys of Marvin Glass is the perfect holiday gift for the young at heart who fondly recall the toys designed by the genius, Marvin Glass. This book is a long overdue tribute to one of the most prolific toy inventors in American history. Joyce Grant has compiled an amazing archive of images of the toys designed by Marvin Glass and Associates.

Marvin Glass was a toy inventor of humble beginnings who formed his toy design and engineering firm in Chicago in 1941. MGA became the first independent design firm in the toy industry, placing their creations with different toy firms, eventually creating a stable of iconic toys that were manufactured by Hasbro, Mattel, Ideal, Milton Bradley, the Marx Toy Company, and dozens of other toymakers.

giftguide-graphic-008The roll call of toys invented by Marvin Glass and Associates includes such classics as Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, the game Mousetrap, the game Operation, Mr. Machine, Lite Brite, SSP Cars, the Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle, Mystery Date, Inch Worm, and hundreds of other memorable toys. You will find photographs of well over a hundred of his inventions in this book.

This not an in-depth biography. The Amazing Toys of Marvin Glass is essentially a lavishly-illustrated coffee table book and as such is completely successful in its mission of showing us the vast expanse of memorable toys brought to us by Marvin Glass and Associates. .

The pure nostalgic glee that a reader of a certain age will get flipping through this book is comparable only to hopping in a time machine and revisiting your favorite childhood toy store. The point driven home by collecting all these images in one book is the sheer amazing scope of how one design firm managed to create so many hugely successful toys for so many competing toy companies.

You can find The Amazing Toys of Marvin Glass at Amazon, or order through any local bookstore using the ISBN number provided.

Monday Morning Art: The 2016 PopCult Gift Guide

mma-11-14

This week’s art is the logo that you will see all over this blog for the next month. Later today the twelfth annual PopCult Gift Guide kicks off and this may well be the biggest one yet.

Each day for at least the next month you will be able to find at least three specific gift ideas (one of them local) and one general guide to a broad pop culture topic. We will be recommending toys, books, music, videos, local gift certificate ideas, graphic novels, magazines and more. Every day the posts will show up between 8 AM and 9 AM, so that you can start your day with a great PopCult-recommended gift idea for the people in your life (and that includes you, you know).

There will be special posts on Thanksgiving and Black Friday that will be the only posts on those days, but the rest of the next month will tell you about tons of cool stuff, and where you can find it. We are going to try to keep the gift ideas reasonable this year. I don’t think any of them are more than a hundred dollars, and the vast majority will set you back less than fifty bucks.

Since this is a labor-intensive undertaking, our internet radio station, The AIR, will be in reruns this week, except for new episodes of Life Speaks with Michele Zirkle Marcum, Laugh Appalachia and The Third Shift. Next week is going to be devoted to marathons and special programs that you can read about right here in PopCult as they unfold. You can listen at the website, or on this neat giftguide-graphic-004little present of an embedded player…

Check back later today for the beginning of the 2016 PopCult Gift Guide, and if you want to see our graphic even bigger, click on it.
