Batman In The Year Without A Toy Fair

The PopCult Toybox

The 2021 International Toy Fair in New York is not happening due to the pandemic.  It would have been going on as we speak, setting up today and hitting full-speed this weekend, but since it isn’t, the major toy companies are holding virtual events and making random online announcements. Funko already dropped most of their news last month and tons of news is pouring out of other companies in the next few days.

I will attempt to shine the spotlight on a few outstanding toys that are in the pipeline to come out later this year. The plan is to drop short posts whenever I can over the next several weeks.

Today we have news from Spin Master on a cool new giant Batman playset and an RC vehicle that are billed as “Bat-Tech.

Let’s just quote the press release:

Get ready for adventure after adventure after adventure with the Batman® Bat-Tech Transforming Batcave™, a child-size figure (measuring over 30 inches tall) that transforms into a playset. With 10 different areas to play, the set features interactive sounds activated by the elevator that goes up and down through the levels. The playset is compatible with the 4-inch figures and comes with an exclusive Batman figure. Fall 2021, Age: 4+, SRP: $99.99

The All-Terrain RC Batmobile can cruise through just about anything and on any surface thanks to its performance tires. Mud, grass, and snow are not an issue, and it can even drive on water.  The All-Terrain RC Batmobile features bright blue accent lines and a sweet design that blends a sleek cockpit with a monster truck-style aesthetic, making this the perfect Batmobile for just about any occasion. The All-Terrain RC Batmobile is compatible with Spin Master’s 4 inch figures. Fall 2021, Age: 4+, SRP: $49.99

These are two cool-looking new toys, and they are compatible with the 4-inch figures, which are popular with kids, adult collectors and parents who don’t have a lot of room. Check out the photos below.

We’ll be looking at more cool stuff from Spin Master over the weekend, and look for lots more toy coverage in PopCult in the coming weeks.

The Batcave Playset doubles as 30" tall figure.

Open him up and you have a huge Batcave playset.

From there, the Caped Crusader can patrol Gotham City in this unassuming car that blends right in with other traffic.

PopCult’s Lost Music

With your PopCulteer tied up with a magazine deadline, today seems as good a day as any to spring some long-lost audio on my readers.

Back in the early years of PopCult, when we were hosted at the Charleston Gazette, I used to regularly post music, some of it was my own compositions, but mostly these were songs by other local artists.  At the time, you could click on the song title and a little player would drop down and play the song.

During one of our frequent server moves and redesigns, the plug-in that played that audio fell by the wayside, and I thought most of that music was lost. But when I ported all my content over to our new location, quite a bit of it resurfaced. So today we’re going to give you a listen to a great lost PopCult album, featuring music from  Under The Radar, Three Bodies, The HeyDays, Whistlepunk, 69 Fingers, Mel Larch and yours truly.

At some point, I’ll go back and fix the original posts, but that’ll be when I’m not so busy.

First up we have a tune by The HeyDays, which was Douglas Imbrogno and Paul Calicoat. We originally posted this song in December, 2006. It was recorded at LiveMix Studio, produced and engineered by Brian Young, and it’s a take on the traditional tune, “Shady Grove.” We featured this same performance in the RFC video show, but that video used the camera audio, with no production and didn’t sound as good as this version…

PopCult’s partner-in-crime, Melanie Larch

Later that month the first RFC Christmas Show featured Mel Larch (you ought to know who she is by now), singing “Ave Maria” accapella, on the fire escape outside LiveMix.

Of course, Mel is now Mrs. PopCulteer, and she still has the voice of an angel.

This was a huge hit on our first Christmas show, and is still one of our most-watched music videos.

We also posted the audio from that…

In April, 2007 I randomly posted a remastered recording of the legendary band, Clownhole, recorded live at The Charleston Playhouse in 1989. Here’s a soundboard-to-cassette version of “Old Man Jumping Over A Fence.”

Also in that month, we brought you a performance of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” by Under The Radar.

Rusty, Bill and Mark tore through this version of the classic rock song while warming up for their performance on episode 17 of Radio Free Charleston.

In May, 2007, Whistlepunk 2.0 treated us to a preview of their song, “Outshine.”  Whistlepunk 2.0 was Spencer Elliott, Dan Jordan, Brian Young and Karen Allen.

In December, 2015 I uploaded this song by 69 Fingers.  For some reason I never posted it in the blog, but I did feature the band in our Christmas episode that year. Anyway, this is one of the audio files that managed to survive, so here it is. I’m not sure of the title. If you know, feel free to share it in the comments.

This next file got shuffled around so much that I can’t ascertain when it was originally posted, but here we find Three Bodies (Jon “Kris” Cormany, Brian Lucas and Brian Young), with a demo recording produced by the band with  Spencer Elliott and your humble blogger back in 1992.

Three Bodies booked time in Pat Arnold’s recording studio above Gorby’s Music in South Charleston, and invited Spencer and me in as extra ears. Spencer brought the musical and engineering expertise, and I got the band into The Empty Glass for several hours one Saturday before they opened, so they could rehearse four songs over and over and over. I took particular interest in one song (“Shingles and Tar”) and two of the other songs were fully realized by the band already.

This one was more of Spencer’s baby, in terms of arrangment and production. It’s called “Gardens of Hope.”

Finally we have one of my goofy instrumental midi compositions. This one is called “Stompy” and it’s the only one of several tunes I posted to the blog. Many of them were wiped out in what is thought by many to be a merciful act of God. However, I still have copies of them all, and they will be restored…just as soon as we start having 36 hour days.

A New/Old RFC, Plus An All-New Swing Shift Tuesday

Tuesday on The AIR we take yet another dive into the archives for classic episodes of Radio Free Charleston and NOISE BRIGADE, but we do have a all-new episoe of The Swing Shift.  If you want to hear the audio joyfullness yourself, you simply have to move your cursor over and tune in at the website, or you could just stay on this page, and  listen to the cool embedded player over at the top of the right column.

We have a special compilation edition of Radio Free Charleston at 10 AM and 10 PM Tuesday.  This week wego back and combine two very old episodes of the show, one from 2015 and one from 2016, into one three-hour celebration of great local music.

Included in this new Frankensteined program, we have music from legendary Charleston Playhouse bands from 1989-90, including eight tunes from Stark Raven. Mix into this a heaping helping of Charleston music circa 2015/16 and you get a pretty wild and varied collection of great West Virginia music, with more than a few surprises. We have everything from one-man-bands, to cabaret rock to heavy metal, ambient music and more.

This week I am one-again tied up with other projects (including restoring PopCult’s early posts to their original state) and found myself with not enough time to do new radio shows. So I came up with this clever plan, since these episodes of RFC volumes three and four have not been heard by human ears for over five years. Part of me hates to resort to the archives, but another part of me is glad to revive these great shows for people who might have missed them the first time around.

Check out the playlist to see all the goodies we bring you this week…

Monday Morning Art: Windy

It has been almost a year since your PopCulteer has made a trip to Chicago. Since I’m missing the city where I got married, and I felt like trying out some new cheap pastel crayons, I decided to do a quick pastel piece on some funky textured paper stock I’ve had laying around for a few decades. This scene is based on a series of photos I took on one of our many trips to Chicago.

If you want to see it bigger, just click on the image.

Meanwhile, Monday at 9 AM on The AIR, we bring you three cool episodes of Sydney’s Big Electric Cat (which follow the 7 AM replay of last Friday’s new episode).  This way you can fill your President’s Day with chrunchy New Wave Goodness. Then you can tune into a recent episode of  Prognosis at 3 PM.

Due to the lockdown in the UK, the Haversham Recording Institute programs will likely be in rerun mode for the next six weeks or so. Luckily we have a pretty extensive library of high-quality repeats to share with you.

You can hear Prognosis on The AIR Monday at 3 PM, with replays Tuesday at 7 AM, Wednesday at 8 PM, Thursday at Noon, Saturday at 10 AM and Sunday at 2 PM.

You can listen to The AIR at the website, or on the embedded radio player at the top of the right-hand column of this blog.

Sunday Evening Videos: Cartoons For Valentine’s Day

Nothing says “I Love You” more than watching cool cartoons together…at least here in the PopCult household.

So on this special day, we’re bringing you a bunch of our favorite weird, independent cartoons. Above, you see the live action/animated Neverwhere, by the late Richard Corben.  I have been a fan of Corben’s for fifty years, and was deeply saddened when I heard he passed away late last year at the age of 80. This film was made in the 1960s, just before he broke into underground comics and later Warren’s horror comics magazines and Heavy Metal. I never got the chance to see this while he was alive. I’ve heard about it almost since it was made, but had no idea it was online until now.

This story mutated into Den, which was adapted, very badly, as one of the segments of the Heavy Metal movie in the early 80s. Here you can get a much better idea of what Corben’s vision was, even though he did this on a shoestring budget. That’s him playing the lead in the live action sequences, too.

Below you’ll see more classic animated shorts from John and Faith Hubley, The National Film Board of Canada, Marv Newland, Bruno Bozetto, Zagreb Film and even my brother. They’ll make you all romantic and stuff for the holiday.

The RFC Flashback: MINI SHOW number 45

This week we go back to January, 2015 for an episode of The RFC MINI SHOW that dug deep into our archives for vintage video footage from 1991 of the legendary Charleston band, Go Van Gogh.

This was recorded the same night as the performance from which I extracted the song played over the end credits of the latest video episode of Radio Free Charleston just six weeks ago. I have been milking this video for thirty years now.

Go Van Gogh consisted of two sets of brothers, Stephen and Mark Beckner, who are still making music, and Timothy and the late Johnny Rock. On this night they were joined by Bain Ashworth on percussion and Mark Mingrone on keyboards. You’ll hear the band performing three songs in this show, one each sung by Stephen, Mark and Tim. The sound is a little low-fidelity, and there’s only one camera angle, but the raw energy of the band comes through loud and clear.

This will be the last new show we hear from Sydney for at least a month. Navigating the travel restrictions has been tricky for our friends at Haversham Recording Institute in London, and they have decided to cut back on their shows for The AIR to work on paying gigs for the duration. They hope to return with new episodes in late March or early April.

The Odd Intersection Of The Clash and The Beatles

Last year Dhani Harrison announced that he was reviving Dark Horse Records, the record label founded by his late father, George Harrison. At the time he said that the new Dark Horse would be strictly a reissue label, and the focus would primarily be on music that George created or produced for other artists, but that he would also be releasing archive catalog recordings by other artists.

And he named former Clash frontman Joe Strummer as the first signee to Dark Horse. Strummer on Dark Horse is actually a good fit, even if it seemed a bit random initially.  Fans have been looking forward to seeing how Dark Horse handles Strummer’s solo legacy.

Now we have the details, and the first Joe Strummer release on Dark Horse will be out next month.

ASSEMBLY is the brand new remastered 16-track collection of Joe Strummer’s greatest solo work.

The album includes a never-before-heard acoustic home recording of ‘Junco Partner’ and live versions of The Clash classics ‘I Fought The Law’ and ‘Rudie Can’t Fail’ with his band, the Mescaleros. It’s been over eighteen years since Strummer died of a previously-unknown heart condition, and it’s great to see his music kept alive and in good hands.

All tracks have been remastered by Grammy Award Winner Paul Hicks (The Beatles / George Harrison / The Rolling Stones / John Lennon) and includes liner notes from musician Jakob Dylan.

The rest of our AIR Music Specialty programs are encores today. Nigel Pye, along with our other friends at Haversham Recording Institute have finally become overwhelmed by the latest lockdown in the UK, and won’t be able to fit producing Prognosis, Sydney’s Big Electric Cat and Psychedelic Shack into their remote-working schedule for the next several weeks (with one last show we might get this week because it’s in progress). So we’ll be bringing you classic episodes while we wait for things to clear up.

And in related news, I am unlikely to have a new episode of The Swing Shift until next week, because of some projects around the house that required my immediate attention. You can still hear The Swing Shift Tuesdays at 3 PM, with replays Wednesday at 7 AM and 6 PM, Thursday at 2 PM,  Saturday at 5 PM and Sunday at 10 AM, only on The AIR. You can also hear all-night marathons, seven hours each, starting at Midnight Thursday and Sunday evenings.
